Romantic suspense novel with historical Old San Francisco setting
Harmonie released Wil's arm and skipped a few feet ahead of him. She'd reached the corner and paused in the intersection, looking back at Wil. Waiting for him to catch up. He'd fallen behind, lost in his ruminations. He trotted to draw even with Harmonie. Something big and dark caught his eye.
"Harmonie!"
She started to answer, unaware he shouted in frantic warning. "Damn it, girl! Move!"
Wil launched himself at her a split second before a buckboard came careening into the intersection from the cross street, narrowly missing them. Harmonie let out a yelp and landed in a sprawl on the opposing sidewalk; Wil ended up scrambling facedown in the mud. He lifted his head as the wagon swept past and saw a second man standing in the loaded bed. Even as Wil noted the oddity of a passenger there, a blade slashed downward and large conical shapes tumbled into the street. Bouncing right at him.
Barrels. He and Harmonie were still in the path of danger.
