This panda bear is graced with two;
A snail, alas, is less a few;
An octopus holds onto eight,
and grows one back if lost to fate;
The centipede has far too many,
and Long John Silver hardly any!
The cheetah’s four are really fast;
The tortoise, sadly, comes in last;
Australia’s bouncing kangaroo
springs overland on his hind two;
(With tail to balance, some will say: “Three!”
But they remain to convince me).
A fish has none nor does the whale;
A monkey two - plus a very long tail;
Male decapodal crabs have ten
as do their wives (more aptly ‘hen’);
Giraffes have four so long, they sits
and quench their thirst, by doing splits!
A dog will say, “’Cos I’ve got four
I need to go for walkies more.”
A cat’s got four but he’s agin,
unlike our hound he will stay in;
(Perhaps, at home, cats sip their port
and plan their days and paws for thought!).
The wandering albatross in flight
has two, but uses left nor right;
The serpent slides upon his belly,
(which makes it awkward watching telly);
An insect, six, from grub to fly,
plus bumble bees that buzz on by.
An elephant has four so big
he cannot trotter like the pig;
The zebra, lion and ape share ten -
that’s four, and four, and two again
or four for two, and two for one;
Now I’m confused! - I must move on…
But as we’re almost out of time
we’ll hop right to our final rhyme;
The frog has four: two fat, two thinner -
which kick peas off a Frenchman’s dinner!
