If there is still a paradise on earth, it could be the Finger Lakes - six lakes nestled in the valleys carved out by glaciers back when God first made the universe. Over every hill there's a shimmering crystal clean lake and another breath-stopping view where each season brings its own beauty blanketing every swell and valley.
It had been a killer cold winter, but now the soil's crust no longer crunched underfoot, as a summer-like sun warmed the breeze. Even this early in the year, the Outlet Trail smelled like spring; the unusually long grass wafted in rows like green hair, and the skunk cabbage seemed spooky because it was so huge. It was astounding how lush everything on the Outlet Trail was while the rest of the area seemed mired in that dormant period that balances between winter and spring. On this trail, between Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake, nature seemed to have awakened earlier. Skyscraper high willow trees bowed over the whispering Outlet creek, and the shallow brook reflected the mossy giants, doubling their joy at being alive. Their new leaves were like green tears, dripping down the long thin branches. On the northern side of the willows, the cinder slash of the Outlet Trail hugged the stream and was lined with old gold leaves which were tucked under maple, oak and elm trees with the willows to the right. All this hardwood was just stirring from a winter snooze; baby green buds sprouted on their skeletal branches, answering spring's wakeup call, and the warm urge to live again was straining to the surface of everything that had been hibernating in the cold. Then a chill painted goosebumps down my spine, as the air carried nature's voices to my heart.
