"Put the arrow away,” Alex pleaded.
"Either jump or be shot,” said the man.
Alex never heard a voice like this before. His deep, cold growl made Alex shiver. He wore a dark, wooly robe with a hood that covered his head. It was nightfall which made it impossible to see his face. A rope held the robe close to his waist. He resembled Death, minus the sickle.
Alex kept his hands above his head while being careful not to infuriate this man thing. The creature held his enormous bow and arrow steady, aiming straight for Alex’s heart. A few feet behind Alex lay a large black hole that appeared to be about the size of a well.
This place seemed unfamiliar to Alex, though he couldn’t see much more than shadows in the dark. From where he stood and far into the distance, the barren land held nothing except large, freestanding boulders. They protruded out of the ground with long, slender jagged peaks.
What am I doing here? he asked himself. The eerie figure moved closer. With each step the creature took, Alex stepped back. He felt the dry, cracked earth crunch under his feet.
“Come on!” Alex shouted. “What have I done to you? I don’t want to jump in that hole!”
“Jump or die.” The man pulled back on the bow with his long, bony fingers.
“Can we at least discuss this?” Alex glanced behind him. He stood only inches from the opening. A cold sweat formed on his forehead and made a slow run down to his eyebrows.
The creature didn’t reply, but stepped forward again. Alex panicked and took another step back and felt the soil give under his feet. With flailing arms, he fell backward in the well.
