Chapter 1: The Choice
“Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.” ~ Napoleon Hill
Choice is our most fundamental freedom. It speaks of free will and opportunity. The chance to decide for ourselves. To succeed or to fail. But, regardless of the outcome, it’s the very fact that we have choice at all that’s significant.
When deprived of choice, people have succumbed to any desperate act to get it back. Wars have been fought. People have been killed. Governments overthrown. It’s dangerous to withhold choice. Some have said that freedom of choice is the one thing that makes us human; not just animals driven by instinct alone.
But, choice can be a double-edged sword. Rather than free, it can imprison. It can paralyze and confound. It can spawn self-contempt and despair. How can something so wonderful and so basic to being human also be our destruction? When choice is present, but no choice is made.
Life has gotten very complex. Choices that our ancestors made with ease have mushroomed into a dizzying array of options that overwhelm. My local Chinese restaurant is a perfect example. The menu weighs as much as a dictionary. After skimming through two pages, I want to run screaming into the streets to the nearest burger place. Too many choices! I zone out.
The trouble is that that phenomenon isn’t limited to Chinese restaurants. It’s in the super market, the want ads, the Yellow Pages, the movie theatres, the internet. Try ordering a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Tall, Grande, or Vente? Mocha, latte, Americano? Non fat, iced, foam? I just can’t cope with all these options sometimes.
With so many choices, and some impossible belief that only one of them will be right, we hesitate – we procrastinate – we sleep on it. Particularly if the choice we’re facing is life-defining – a marriage partner, whether to have kids, how to invest for the future. And especially what to do with our lives.
Many of us have been told from the time we were toddlers that we could be anything we wanted to be…do anything we wanted to do. We were told that our potential was endless. The possibilities were intoxicating, but we knew we had to choose carefully. Throughout our maturing it had become pretty clear that there were right choices and wrong choices…and that most often you’d never know which was which until you chose. And then it would be too late. So, we learned to take our time in deciding – hoping for a clue.
Meanwhile, time marched on.
Here’s a cold hard fact of life: it’s good to have choices, it’s pathetic to never make one.
To hear, as a youth, that you have tremendous potential is exciting. But, when you’re beyond the mid point of your life, unused potential withers. Not because the opportunity no longer exists, necessarily. (Although your dream of dancing for the Bolshoi might be an exception.) Potential diminishes because your capacity to choose has atrophied. Doubt and second-guessing has weakened your choice muscle…use it or lose it.
I imagine that by now you’re thinking of a particular dream you’ve harbored, yet never fulfilled. We all have one. Maybe we’ve just waited for the right time. Maybe we’re still unconvinced that we could actually do it. Whatever the reason, we’ve stalled. And the clock is ticking.
If it’s tough for you to answer the question of whether your dream can come true or not, try this on for size – what if it could and you never even try? How’s that for an epitaph? “She could have, she just didn’t try.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes said it best, “Many people die with their music still in them.” Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.”
It’s time to stop getting ready. It was time years ago. What’s done is done. Today is another day of choice. Don’t let it pass without making one…a big one. Your dream is there (the opportunity) and the choice is possible (the will). All you need is a burning desire. Stoke the fire and don’t look back. Or let regret be the last thought you have on this earth. Which will you choose?
