As she did every Saturday, Myra Madison sat in a corner chair at the library, her face inches away from a book filled with circus pictures. Nothing else caused her fourteen-year-old heart to flutter or had so caught her interest - not until the old junk store opend, that is.
Though it made her walk home longer, Myra changed her route so she could pass the former general store when she was done at the library. The paper-covered window both attracted and annoyed her. She always wondered what was behind it.
In surprise, Myra stared at the uncovered window. A small hand-lettered sign stuck in the corner said AMICUS CURIOSITIES AND MYSTERIES. Beyond it stood rows of clutter, assorted junk and books. Piles and piles of books.
Myra rubbed her stomach to ease the sudden gnawing feeling that hit her. Dare she go in? She was about to leave when a tall thin man opened the door and beckoned.
"I've seen you walk by," he said. "Surely, there's something here that interests you?"
Myra shyly dipped her head and shrugged her shoulders. "I didn't want to bother you." She didn't want to admit that she had no money to spend.
"No bother." He smiled at her. "Come, look around. If you like something, we can talk. I always try to make my customers happy. I don't like to turn anyone away. Everyone should get what they want, don't you agree?"
His voice was kind and grandfatherly. He made her feel comfortable. Myra thought about it. What was the harm in just looking? She ignored the nagging voice in her head that warned about talking to strangers. Besides, he wasn't a stranger if he was doing business here in town.
"I'm the owner, Mr. Amicus," he said. "Take your time. If you want to know about something, don't be afraid to ask."
* Myra looked...and what she found fulfilled her dreams. Or didn't it?
