...The varied smells tickled her nostrils. Spicy, sweet. Hmm, nice. A thick, cloying scent nearly overshadowed the rest. Ahh, it was wonderful. She forgot how pleasurable cooking could be, especially when it was for the right person.
At one time, she had cooked nearly every day. She loved to whip up something new for her beloved Harry until... Well, that was old news. Forget it. It was time for a fresh start. That was the idea behind this little celebration dinner.
Humming happily under her breath, she rechecked each pot and dish. Everything looked good. Guess she hadn’t lost the knack after all.
The stately Grandfather’s clock struck five. She removed her apron and sighed. Funny, it seemed like yesterday...
She stood in the hall and waited, wringing her hands nervously. The second hand on the small, gold watch on her wrist ticked slowly. He should be here any moment. She brightened at the sound of a car door slamming. Footsteps approached. A minute later, the doorbell rang. She wiped her damp hands on her dress and absentmindedly flicked away a stray hair. Smile in place, she reached for the doorknob and swung the door open.
"Harry, I’m so glad you’re here. Please, come in. Dinner’s ready."
A tall, distinguished man, hair slightly gray at the temples, stepped forward. He leaned down and brushed his lips against her cheek. "You look wonderful. I’m so glad you invited us." He stepped aside to make the presentation. "I’d like you to meet Ginger."
She struggled to hide her flash of irritation as he introduced the statuesque redhead beside him. Mary Lou took in the other woman’s red lips and the too-tight dress, her disapproval growing, but silent. Her gaze softened as she studied the man who had once been the center of her life.
He smiled back and held her smaller hand in his. "I’m glad all’s well between us again. I hope this’ll be the first of many dinners we share."...
Yes, indeed.
