The respiratory system is busy 24 hours a day, while we are awake and asleep. Unless we are out of breath, we might not even know our lungs are on the job.

If you have ever wondered how the body knows when it is time to take a breath or exhale, wonder no more.  This book, which is part of THE SUM OF OUR PARTS series, is written in rhyme and illustrated by Eugene Ruble.  The book and the series are well suited to school children ages 7-12, especially those with a curiosity about the human body and its functions.  The book comes complete with factoids on each page, a glossary of terms, word match, word search and a bonus rhyme:  "I Am Hemoglobin".

Excerpt

Inhale good air! Exhale bad!
Breathing's what it's all about.
Respiration's really rad;
O2 in--CO2 out.

Call the system "Respiratory".
With it we can burn our fuel.
What's the process? Here's the story:
Respiration's way too cool.

There's a muscle near our center--
Diaphragm--with dome-like shape.
When contracted, breaths will enter.
When relaxed, those breaths escape.
