The music box was displayed in the center of her coffee table. It was a beautiful object of art. They couldn’t take their eyes off it.
“I see you’re displaying our special gift.”
“Maybe I’m more cultured than you thought.”
“No, I don’t think that’s it.”
She smacked his arm. “I can draw blood, you know.”
“I know, I know. It’s part of your job description, Vampira.” He reached forward and touched the music box. “Have you played it yet?”
She shook her head. “No.”
“Well, then let’s share in its premier performance together.” He found its key switch and gave it a few turns.
Immediately the music started, melodic and rhythmic, a familiar tune that neither of them could name. At once the ballerina began its fluid movements to the rhythm of the music, her leaps, steps, and turns graceful and natural. Ted and Gloria watched closely, transfixed by the figurine’s intricate moves, its near humanlike dance.
When the dance was complete, the ballerina returned to its opening position. Ted spoke the words that both of them were thinking, “That was amazing!”
The ballerina curtsied, as if in response to his praise.
Ted blinked. “Did you see that?”
“Timed response.”
“Damned good timed response.”
Gloria leaned closer. “I wonder . . .”
She jumped back.
Ted asked, “What is it?”
“She blinked. It blinked. The ballerina. It’s -- no, it can’t be. And yet -- it almost seems alive.”
