When Jerome Kronberg, who is facing prosecution for investment fraud, dies in a fall from a mountain in Connecticut, many people suspect that it was no accident.  Some believe it was suicide; others think he died at the hands of an irate client.  Then there are others who suspect a more supernatural cause.  Kronberg had seen the legenday Black Dog twice on the mountain, and the story is that if you see it three times, you die.  The story of The Black Dog is what motivates Marcie to investigate the event for her Weird Happenings Column in Roaming New England Magazine.

While Marcie is dealing with a deadly dog, Amanda is trying to decide whether to accept a proposal of marriage from her insistent boyfriend.  Both women will be forced by the events confronting them to dig down and find new sources of strength.
