Karen sensed motion behind her and heard the gravel crunch of running feet. Without wasting a fragmentary look, she sprinted across the tiny lawn on pure instinct. *Get away*--then find help!
The neighbor's side window opened. "Hey!" the man yelled. "What's going on?!" as Karen reached the street. Her unknown pursuer slipped as he cut sharply off gravel to lawn, and she glanced back, running, at the stumbling hooded man.
