Alexander put his head down and examined her face. As his blue eyes bore into hers, Arabella felt herself blushing. "I do not believe the lady fears a thing," he snapped. "Except, perhaps, not getting her own way. Your father did warn me you've had this keep to yourself for nigh on four years and might have grown to like self-rule, being a willful pup as he recalled."
Arabella jerked her chin up and scowled at him furiously. "I agree it has proven far more congenial than being ruled by some knights I have known!"
His piercing eyes narrowed. "That's as may be. Nevertheless, it is dangerous for a woman to rule alone, and your father on his deathbed has willed it otherwise." He turned to Hume. "Did you summon that priest? This should be done as soon as may be."
"No!" Arabella could not stop herself. "Devil take it," she muttered, angry with herself for her indiscretion. She'd vowed to pretend willingness, the better to take him unaware.
He put his head on one side and clicked his tongue. "Such language from a lady. I think mayhap we should adjourn to your solar, M'lady." Still holding her arm in a bruising grip, he escorted her to her solar and thrust her in. He turned his head to look behind him. "Sir Hume?"
"My Lord?"
"You and your lady will attend us. John!"
"Sir?"
He glanced around. "Make this place as ready as possible for a wedding."
