I recommended Jason Steed to my 11yo son for the action and the lack of "girl stuff" (he is Not Really There Yet); I think the storylines are exciting and engaging for a guy my son's age. HOWEVER, he's a strong reader, and I suspect that he'll notice the slightly stilted language and the telling-not-showing. I know for sure he'll point out the grammatical errors sprinkled throughout the book. (Not Britishisms - he gets that.) I think my son will find this series just okay; he'll enjoy the action, but he'll be bothered by the quality of the writing.
There's a real lack of action books that are age-appropriate for middle-grade/middle-school kids. For that reason, I want to see this series recommended - guys gotta read, and I think this is a good fit for reluctant readers in particular. It's not the best middle-grade novel I've ever seen, but the fact that it's out there and published and popular is a step in the right direction. If your child likes Jason Steed, further reading could include Alex Rider (by Horowitz) and Artemis Fowl (by Colfer) - they are similar in tone,
