EXCERPT TWO
Jake grabbed her arms. “Maggie, your dream was to become a vet. You couldn’t do that if you stayed home.”
She pulled away from his grip. “Dreams change, Jake, I had dreamed just as long of being with you, of being your wife and having your children. But you took all that away from me without even giving me a say in the matter. How could you presume to know I couldn’t be happy with that? How could you do that, how could you stand there and say those words to me? You told me I was nothing more than a challenge to you. That the night we spent together meant nothing to you.
“What would have made me happiest would have been working side by side with you, running a ranch of our own together! Raising our children together! But you didn’t have faith in our love or in me. That’s not love. You couldn’t have loved me at all.” She began hitting his chest with her fists. “How could you have been in love with me and tell me I was nothing more than a good lay? How could you do that Jake? How?”
He pulled her into his arms as she fought to keep hitting him. “I’m sorry, Maggie, so sorry. I was wrong. And I have regretted those words from that day on. I love you, Maggie. I’ve never stopped. Those dreams were mine too. I was...scared. I did have faith in you but I didn’t in myself. I couldn’t have handled the thought of you hating me after we had built a life together.”
She pulled herself out of his arms. “So instead, you wanted me to hate you from that day on? You wanted me to feel that I had been used and tossed away?”
“No! I did everything all wrong...Maggie, what I did was wrong. I was twenty-two years old. I was scared. I had never felt for anyone what I felt for you. It was beyond reason. That feeling has never changed for me. I love you. I thought what I did was the right thing to do. But I knew from the second you slapped me I was wrong. I knew it the minute the words came out of my mouth, and you ran for your car. But I didn’t have a chance to take them back.”
“No! You couldn’t have loved me. If you had, you would have been at the hospital, but you never showed your face once. What’s worse is you ran. You ran as far away from me as you could get so you would never have to see me again.” She walked away from him over to the creek.
In a quiet voice she heard him say, “I was there.”
She turned around to face him. “What?”
“At the accident, at the hospital, I was there. I didn’t leave your room for four days.” His face was full of pain and she had never seen him looking so lost.
“I don’t understand. My parents would have told me if you were there.”
“I made them promise not to,” he said moving closer to her.
“Why Jake, why would you do that?”
