Excerpt

The sun eased its way over the window ledge, and crawled slowly along the floor. As it reached Jason’s eyes, he rolled over and groaned. Slowly Jason eased himself out of his bed. Then remembering today was his sixteenth birthday suddenly Jason was much more awake. He washed and dressed quicker than ever.
“Jason!” His mother shouted. “Your breakfast is ready.”
“I’m coming.”
“Don’t forget to wash.”
Jason smiled to himself then ran down the stairs into the kitchen. The smell of fresh bread and food cooking hit him as he got there; bacon and eggs were frying on the stove. Jason’s mother came over and gave him a big hug. Eliza was a kindly woman who always had a smile on her face and a sparkle in her lovely green eyes. Eliza’s hair was a beautiful shade of auburn but it was turning grey here and there. If Eliza was not helping with the farm, she was cooking, and she could cook the most wonderful food ever.
“Mother”; Jason protested.
“Oh! Sorry.” She answered. “I forgot you’re a man now.”
Jason’s father smiled which was unusual. Garth was a big man, not in height he was only about 5’6” but in presence. His dark brown eyes could say a thousand words without even speaking. He clasped Jason’s hand with his huge hands, and gave him a pat on the back with his huge arms,
“Jason my son today is a day you won’t forget.” He said proudly
Jason heard his mother sob quietly.
“What’s the matter with Mum?”
“It’s nothing, just women all tears and shouting.” Jason’s farther laughed and rubbed his bald head nervously.”
“Now it’s time for your chores.”
“But I thought.” Jason Started.
“Just because you’re sixteen, the chickens and pigs will feed themselves.” They both laughed.
Jason braced himself against the fresh morning air. The morning sun was bright and the sky was a clear blue. Jason whistled a happy tune as he worked mechanically. Looking across the golden fields ripe with corn, made Jason excited something special is going to happen today. Jason wondered at first if everybody had forgotten his birthday. First it was the horses the stable was warm and smelt musty the white stallion in the first stall snorted impatiently.
“All right I am coming.”
Jason lifted a bale of straw with ease and fed the huge stallion. In the next stall was a sweet tempered mare it nuzzled Jason's arm gently.
“Yes I love you to.” Jason gently stroked the mare’s neck as he fed her.
The pigs were at the far end of the farm so Jason started to jog he did not want to miss breakfast.
Jason‘s mind began to wander he thought of Helen, blonde hair, deep blue eyes and that smile that could melt anybody s heart. They had grown up together; there was also Luke and Cain. Luke was small and skinny but he could run like the wind. Once Luke had chased a rabbit into a field and almost caught it, but the rabbit dodged under a hedge at the last minute. Then there was Cain. A happier person you could never Meet, he is a typical Acacion, huge in physique but a bit slow up top. They called themselves the ring of four, and promised to stay friends forever seems a bit childish now Jason smiled to himself.
A loud piercing scream suddenly woke Jason from his daydream. For a minute, Jason stood still as if rooted to the spot, and listened intensely hardly daring to breathe. Jason could hear the sound of horses galloping away. The next thing Jason remembers is running through the kitchen door, he stopped dead unable to take in what was in front of him. Jason’s father was lying in a pool of blood, his sword by his side. Jason looked around the kitchen tables were overturned plates and food were scattered all over the floor. Then he saw his mother lying on the floor Jason ran to her and lifted her head gently she groaned.
“Mother what happened.” Jason sobbed.
“Jason my love we never told them.” He could barely hear her words
“Told them what mother?”
“Never mind, listen carefully.” She coughed a little.
A trickle of blood oozed out of the corner of her mouth and Jason wiped it gently with his finger.
“Under the fire you will find a key, it will open a chest in the attic, in it you will Find your destiny.” She coughed again, “Always remember what we did we did for love.”
