Silent Star
She sat by herself, front row center,
Zydeco blaring, dance floor packed,
Music so loud ears popped,
Chest thumped, rhythms rumbled.
She sat by herself, we all noticed,
Balanced or perched, chain smoking,
Aroma and smoke oozing round her head,
One foot tapping, eyes closed, no one
Asking her to dance.
She sat by herself,
three strands of blinking beads
Round her neck, slight smile on her face,
Gray head tilted, listening to inner tunes,
Faraway attitude, like she wasn’t even there.
She sat by herself, till the bus came,
Packing people off to the next dive,
Big sign raised announcing its arrival.
She got up, pushed through, got herself
To the exit, going against the tide,
Making it out into the cold night.
She left by herself, and others took her seat,
No one seeing where she’d gone,
No one wondering why.
