"Home Schooled," Larry Rochelle's seventh book of poetry, will be published in October. Poetry includes the aura of the Kansas plains, small town life and difficult relationships.
Flint Hills
not as desolate at mid-morning,
not as bleak as on TV, the miles
of slanted rock slake-off
beauty like some documentary
on bobcats.
they roam, too, through the creek beds
angling north to south,
some magnet pulling them toward
creation.
slicked streets tumble the miles away
while towns seen in the distance
night-flicker with coziness.
few walk down those gullies,
the cattle spread out for miles,
and most face the wind, searching
bovine brains for quiet musings.
it’ll get cold tonight, the norther
moving down from Canada,
visitors snapping on headlights,
the warm yellow beams ticking off
their hopes for motels.
