The great Gold Rush of 1849 opened the doors to the State of Jefferson. Harry L. Wells, in his History of Siskiyou County, California, credits the first major mining in this region to Lindsay Applegate, who traveled south from Jacksonville, Oregon, in 1849 to mine along Beaver Creek and the Klamath and Scott Rivers. In June 1850, prospectors from Trinity River crossed the Salmon-Trinity Alps and found enough gold to whet their appetites.
With the unique characteristics of the geography and climate, this region lent itself to the rugged nature of the people drawn here. From the Cascade Range to the Siskiyou Mountains, from the top of Mount Shasta to the top of Mount McLoughlin or Mount Lassen, the people here have lived in the close proximity to the rivers and forests and peaks and valleys.

A Fascinating History of little known State of Jefferson

For history buffs, this volume is a unique collection of photos of the mythical State of Jefferson, the area between Oregon and California. Lots of people don't know that this was a real historical movement, and the people even declared themselves a state, right before Pearl Harbor. A fun look at the history of the movement that started in the 1850s. Some of the photos I enjoyed most were the old ones of the miners and local Shasta tribe and the old towns. Some great ones of Mt. Shasta and old roads and bridges. It makes a great gift for someone who has everything and likes to read, especially history. I highly recommend this book! Lots of fun. I'd love to see a sequel.
