Twelve generations ago Waldrons approached North American shores. They settled in New Netherland. Three hundred fifty years later, it seemed, all trace of them had disappeared.
The town of Johnsburg, New York, is located in the northwestern part of Warren County, approximately sixty miles north of the state's capital city, Albany. The communities scattered throughout Warren County are a part of the magnificent Adirondack Mountain Region. At the base of Gore Mountain lies the tiny hamlet of North Creek and at the edge of the town, behind the Baptist Church (formerly the Free Will Baptist Church),the Union Cemetery. It is here amid the old stone markers that this story, as well as my first novel, MANHATTAN: SEEDS OF THE BIG APPLE, was conceived.
It's quiet up there on that hillside. With the exception of a lone bagpiper who shows up on occasion, the only sounds that one might hear are the faint whispers of souls pleading recognition. Even though each tablet bearing family names such as Waldron, Roblee, or Freebern represents the alpha and omega of one unique journey, I was drawn toward two slabs in particular.
