As much as I would have loved to pull up to the fraternity house in the Corvette with pipes rumbling, the only parking space we could find was two blocks from the house. I was still proud to walk up the sidewalk with Elaine on my arm.
Things were already ‘rocking’ at the house when we arrived. The house had been decorated with banners and streamers celebrating both the university and the fall season. When we walked in, all eyes turned to us. There were waves and shouts from the guys I knew well, but suddenly, the chapter president and several of the upperclassmen were now eager to shake my hand and be introduced to Elaine. Normally they couldn't even remember my name, but suddenly they had decided to become my buddies. One of them hurried to offer her a drink from the whiskey sour bar that had been erected for the evening. It was not until I returned from hanging up her jacket that I realized one of the reasons that Elaine was attracting so much attention. Beyond her natural beauty, she just plain looked great. She wore tight-fitting red ski pants tucked into spike-heeled boots. Her tight white sleeveless top fit like a man’s tee shirt. The most noticeable feature were her perky nipples that crowned her shapely and obviously unsupported breasts. My mouth dropped open. At the first break in the conversation, I whispered to her.
“Forget some of our underwear did we?”
“What’s the matter, you’ve never seen titties before?
“No…err…yes, but not usually…that is…umm.”
“Will you relax? It’s a party, let’s have some fun.”
She turned back to the young men with whom she had been talking. Elaine easily dropped into the ‘cocktail party mode’ that she had apparently perfected during all those years of faculty parties. The difference was that, instead of stuffy old professors and their wives, she was now surrounded by young lions with peaking hormones, all straining to get close to her. She seemed to bathe in the attention and responded with a mastery of small talk that left me feeling inadequate. Not the least of my inadequacies resulted from the leering eyes of my fraternity brothers as they drifted from her face to her chest.
She finished one drink and started her next. I did not know how well Elaine handled alcohol, but these drinks were being served in the big twelve-ounce plastic cups usually reserved for beer drinking. I thought I should try to rescue her from the wolf pack that she continued to captivate. Hearing the band starting to play downstairs, I moved to whisk her away.
“Elaine, would you like to see the party room.”
“Thank you Jamie that would be lovely. Please excuse me gentlemen.”
She took my arm and we started toward the steps to the basement.
“You’re certainly a hit.”
“They’re so cute, trying to impress me.”
“And trying to keep from staring at your boobies.”
She snickered, “Yes, and that too.”
When we reached the top of the steps the music became much louder. The farther down we went, the louder it became. A group of people was already downstairs and the dancing circle had started.
“Now THIS is a party! WHEE! YEA!” Elaine was off and running, leaving me trying to keep up. She put her drink on a nearby shelf and started to dance. I was not expecting what I was seeing. This was not ‘her music’. She was ‘jitterbug generation’ and rock and roll was typically lost on them. At the weddings I had attended, those ‘jitterbugs’ that I had seen were stiff and awkward with rock and roll. Elaine had a true feel for the rhythm that transcended the style of the music. Her feet were on the beat and her body seemed to flow with the music. Her arms accented her dance without the incongruous flailing I had seen with others. Elaine was…a dancer. Whether trained or natural, it appeared that she simply became swept up in the tune and let it carry her along. It was strangely beautiful to see someone dance like that here in a fraternity house.
She paused and grabbed my hand, pulling me onto the floor with her. When she saw my steps, she began to adapt to me. She was awkward at first, but gradually the edges wore away. The song ended and Elaine grabbed her drink. She was slightly out of breath.
“Do you know how long it has been since I’ve danced like that?”
“A week? You do it very good.”
She laughed, “A bit longer than that, but thank you anyway.”
We had attracted attention and some of the fraternity brothers came over to greet us. A couple brought their dates, but others came alone leaving the girls they had been dancing with standing alone. They were eager to meet Elaine while basically ignoring me.
With the next tune, Elaine was off and dancing again. She somehow managed to draw others to dance with her until we had two competing dance circles in motion. My friends were drawing from Elaine's energy and her enjoyment of the music.
After the song ended, Elaine finished her drink and sent me upstairs for another. When I returned, Elaine stood up against a wall as one of the senior football players leaned toward her with his arm against the wall. When I arrived, he didn't look happy. Elaine slid away calling, “Nice to meet you Roger.”
“He seemed very interested.”
“He said I was quite a babe and he invited me up to his room. I asked him if he owned an NFL team and he said no. I told him, 'I guess my answer is no then.' Poor dear, he was so confused.”
“You're really enjoying this, aren't you?”
“You're goddamned right I am. All these strong young men wanting to get into my pants, you bet your ass I like it. Before you I used to lay in bed and play with a vibrator, pretending that some young guy with a big hard cock had broken into the house and was taking me. So yes, I am enjoying this.”
