The purpose of this book as written by Harold Begbie is to bring home to men’s minds the fact that Conversion is the only means by which a radically bad person can be changed into a radically good person. Through true accounts of conversion he shows that men consciously wrong, inferior, and unhappy become consciously right, superior, and happy. It produces not a change, but a revolution in character. It does not alter, it creates a new personality. Men who have been irretrievably bad, under conversion have become ardent savers of the lost. Before the days of AA and the Oxford movement was the work of the Salvationists of the Salvation Army. When one was willing to turn to God, the seeds of conversion were laid. It was the rejoicing, singing, and irrepressible happiness of the Salvationists, which made him such a powerful savoir of other men. The men and women of the Oxford Group, AA and the many other 12 steps groups carried forward these same qualities that make them powerful saviors. It is our hope that bringing these stories to the reader would be a catalyst to help them find a program that works for them or reinforces their current conversion/recovery work. This is a story that early members of Alcoholics Anonymous read which helped many with the problems they were struggling with. When you are an addict in recovery, it is such a blessing to have reading material to help you with your struggle. When you are struggling, it helps to know that you are not alone. This story may be old, but it still gives the right message. Each chapter is another story of hope and salvation.
This book is full of stories of people who seem beyond salvation, but are able to change their lives with help. It really shows how the Salvation Army gives people a second chance. They don't concentrate on giving hand outs, but hand ups. This book also deals with addictions, especially the addiction to alcohol.

We learn about some of the methods they use to help the men and women who have fallen, to get back up on their feet.
I have always had a special spot in my heart for the Salvation Army. I marvel at all of the good deeds they have performed since their inception. In this book we follow the lives of some of the people that have been helped out by the organization. The author follows them from their fall to their eventual triumph over life's miseries. Perhaps by reading their stories, we to can learn how to get through the difficult times in our lives.

Twice Born Men is an amazing book that really touched my heart. Everyone has heard of the Salvation Army. Until you read this book, you will not realize how amazing this organization is and all that they do. The book details how the organization started and what it has accomplished. I am a firm believer in second chances. The stories in this book will make the reader believe in them too or reaffirm why they do. The stories are well written and heart felt. The hardships and hard luck stories of the individuals give the reader hope. The struggles of these individuals and their eventual successes makes the reader thankful that his or her struggles aren't so difficult. The Salvation Army is so much more than volunteers ringing bells at Christmastime. You really will learn so much.

I don't think I would have ever read this book if it was not republished, I don't know how I missed it before but I am glad I caught it now. I have a whole new respect for the Salvation Army and what they do as a result of reading Twice Born Men.
Actually, after reading this book I have been looking at volunteer work and charity in a different light. I would recommend this book to anyone that works for a charity or who spends a lot of time volunteering with others. It is a great way to see and believe in what lives can become when people are given a chance to redeem themselves. ,
