Life in the Spirit/Telepathy

Category:  Relationships
Type: Fiction

A novel about a legal scam that began a "Truth Marriage" - a special mystery in the spirit.

Based on a true story (refer foreword for clarification). If you look up the AVO or apprehended vioence order in Australia - you will be led to believe these are about protecting people from domestic violence. In some cases sure - but these court orders also appear to be mainly scams and from this novel you can obtain a proper picture of how court orders such as AVOs are sold for a price. A tale about two people taking the legal system head on, in so doing falling in love with one another as well as discovering a most impossible link in their lives. The mystery of a Jewish Truth Marriage has been lost with the Holocaust. In our time, Darth and Helen, the people in this story, are the only known Truth Marriage. A “Truth Marriage” is an “in the spirit” union between a man and a woman, usually not married to one another in ordinary life, who accept one another in the spirit by “the will of God”. Their marriage is “in the spirit”. But such a union only works for persons who are "virgins" in the "in the spirit" sense meaning only ever had at most one sexual partner. The story is also about how do two people, absolutely committed to "do not commit adultery" overcome that seemingly impossible personal barrier - in fact, overcoming that barrier is perhaps a mightier challenge that taking on a legal system! The term “Truth Marriage” is a traditional term. The “truth” in such a marriage is the acceptance of one another by the “will of God”. That is the basic and fundamental truth in a Truth Marriage. Over 20 years we have reconstructed what such were and in Darth and Helen we also have a proper, sanctioned, “holy”, Truth Marriage. It is likely these were of two types. Perhaps nine out of ten such marriages came together when two people not married to one another, had found that their spouse had an affair. In a true Jew, this resulted in natural love dying and such deep turmoil a person went deeper into the spirit and found, linked to, a soul in the same position. For such a marriage, a weekend of love would have been the norm. This would have reconciled both and have the effect that natural love could again begin in their physical marriages also. The other type, the rarer one, is like Darth and Helen. While Helen is in that position, Darth is not, consequently, especially because of her super looks, Helen has to satisfy herself Darth is not a man like her spouse Frank who might jump at a chance of having sex with someone he thinks he can. That is the “truth” she seeks in their personal friendship. The consummation of this type of marriage was not a weekend of love, that was probably optional, in fact even meeting one another in ordinary life was possibly optional, but to do something for the community – in the case of Darth and Helen that is a clinical report showing how families of victims of Alzheimer’s are abused by courts that sell court orders. Truth Marriage

(Extract from foreword)

In August 2007 a report was published and advertised on Internet and in other ways, a report that appears to clearly demonstrate how in Australia it appears that certain court orders called AVO’s (Apprehended Violence Orders) have nothing to do with any proven violence but are used to defraud family members of the rights to property of dementia and Alzheimer’s victims. The price of such a court order appears to be typically around $10,000. Since then, information has come our way that suggests these AVOs may also be used in divorce cases and child maintenance cases to gain an unfair advantage. In other words, such court orders may be just “big business” and may have nothing to do whatsoever with any proven or suggested or probable potential violence. It appears to be simply a scam which might be widely known about and practised by lawyers.

That report was the end result, or the “consummation”, of a tradition known as a Truth Marriage. A tradition practised by those party to the Judeo-Christian mystical experience called Life in the Spirit. It is a Jewish in the spirit tradition even though the man to such a marriage does not need to be a Jew, as in the case of this story, but that is extremely rare.

To appreciate the concepts mentioned in our novel, concepts such as Noble Ways and Life in the Spirit and Holy Ways and so on, please refer to the Appendix as you come across such a concept.

This novel is a “true story” however what that means has to be understood in the context of a “Truth Marriage”. The “true” in the “true story” refers to either “in the spirit” experiences which may or may not overlap with ordinary life, or to ordinary life.

Chapter 1 - Truth is Only the Beginning

Parramatta court was one of the larger local courts in Sydney, Australia. Darth walked through the security doors, had his briefcase scanned, smiled at the two court officers behind the security desk, and walked upstairs. He looked up the scheduled hearings, found the name and the room, and proceeded to that area and sat down on a dark red lounge.

Darth detested everything the Anglo-Saxon courts, as he thought of Australian courts, represented. While he approved of, and perhaps even loved, the Australian people, he detested those whom he considered were Anglo-Saxons and such only found in a court. To him the Anglo-Saxon courts were about control and domination and the business of law was “big business”. The legal forums did not speak English in any normal way – and the very reason an ordinary person had almost no chance at successfully representing themselves and had to pay a fortune to hire lawyers. The language of law the Anglo-Saxon invented perverted and twisted common sense meanings in order to make it as complicated as possible – that in turn ensured lots of money was made by those party to what Darth personally considered a disgusting profession of law. To appreciate such things, one had to understand the mentality and the “class structure” system of the Anglo-Saxon. Their Royalty came first, then the government, and then the law courts. Those who were willing to tow the line and behave in accordance with the Anglo-Saxon rules about what law was and what was required, could make themselves very wealthy and the system was engineered to make sure this happened. The last thing the Anglo-Saxon legal system desired was people representing themselves – and the very reason for twisting and perverting most English words used in the definition of laws, and giving such words a unique meaning only familiar to lawyers. That was probably the true reason Darth found the Anglo-Saxon courts disgusting and offensive. A remnant of “dinosaurs” and certainly not a modern cohesive framework of law. In theory Australia had such a framework – in practise, the view he had formed, was that those sitting as magistrates and judges in local courts barely understood the intent and meaning of any law – they were a law onto themselves and could write court orders on whims or pretexts. It depended how much money the legal occupational group was likely to make from a case.

Sitting near him a woman with longish blonde hair, no more than thirty. A lovely woman with a figure to match. She wore a white shirt and a red business suit. The skirt to her knees when she stood and slid up along a shapely and smooth leg as she sat. The leather seats inclined rather deeply at the back consequently much of her red skirt had slid up her shapely smooth legs. On her lap a pile of papers in a folder. Darth could not help taking a longer discreet glance at her exposed legs which seemed ever so smooth and perfect. Or perhaps it was the way he was feeling – he loathed the courts with all his body, mind, and soul, and to see such lovely feminine legs in this setting was like seeing an angel in the den of thieves – nay, in the house of Satan! There was something so positively attractive about those legs.

“Excuse me,” she moved closer, “I have never been here. How long before the actual hearing?”

“About half an hour.” Darth glanced at his watch. “You look like a lawyer - with all that paper on your lap.”

“No, I am not a lawyer,” the woman shook her head in a lovely way and smiled, “my husband is a Rabbi. Now and then he has a client who needs legal assistance. Clients too poor to hire lawyers but not particularly intelligent. Anyway, my husband suggested I ought to try and assist this particular mother – just to be with her, explain matters to her, try and see if I can get some justice. She felt sick this morning and said she might not come - in which case I will be lost.”

“Is there such a thing as a poor Jew?” Darth tried, what he thought, was humour.

“That sounds racist,” the woman said, “of course there are.”

“Sorry,” Darth felt awkward. “I grew up with my mother who had this thing that all Jews are money lenders and rich. She certainly did not hate Jews – gees, back in Russia, during the second world war, she and her mother hid a Jewish girl under their bed when the police came looking for Jews. They risked their life to save a lovely soul – no, she does not hate Jews, but for some reason formed this view that Jews are wealthy.”

“That is interesting and I would love to hear more but for now can you explain to me please how is this possible? How can such vicious and cruel court order like this one I have, be just handed on people?” Helen smiled.

“You see that man?” Darth did not know at this point in time what the court order was but this did not matter. He pointed to a man in a long black cloak and a white wig. “A barrister. What are these about? Justice? Nonsense. They are after money. They want luxury cars, private school education for their children, they want houses with water views and investment properties. Ego, prestige, image, wealth, status, position – such the ambitions of that stupid life that sees people as objects. Such things in time become judges. Justice? This is Anglo-Saxon Australia. The only constitution there is, is about control and domination. A colonial mindset devoid of sense or reason, except such reason that gives control and domination. I don’t think you have much of a chance to help anyone - if you are not a lawyer.”

The woman smiled and moved closer. ”My name is Helen.” She put her hand out which Darth shook.

“Darth.” Darth replied, holding onto her hand for longer than the norm – such fine texture to her skin!

“Are you a lawyer?” She asked.

“No. Now and then I research the legal state of mind. This is Parramatta court, perhaps the most corrupt court in the country. They sell court orders, especially the types called AVOs. These are used to isolate families and whoever purchases such a court order goes about legally transferring wealth of perhaps an elderly person to themselves. Or, used to intimidate in divorce cases. Or, used to separate a father from a mother who has custody so she can have the children to herself. Many things these things are used for – but mostly to set in place a wealth grab from an elderly parent or relative.”

“Corrupt?” Helen asked.

“Oh yes! They sell court orders using different schemes. That offensive vile life called magistrates and judges is too cunning to be caught directly accepting payment for signing court orders – no, different schemes are used to make the legal occupational group super wealthy. I could go and on about such schemes. The Devil himself could learn from this disgusting shit called magistrates and judges.”

“I share,” Helen smiled, “your loathing of courts and law but for different reasons – holy reasons in my view. I wonder if you could help me?” Helen found some papers in her folder and handed them to Darth. “This poor woman has been served with this Apprehended Violence Order which stops her seeing her mother. Why? She has not done anything. I know the woman. She is gentle and mild. A saint I would say, often visits her mother and stays with her and cooks her favourite food and looks after her mother very well. According to this court order while she was in her mother’s house, she pushed her sister who called the police claiming she was assaulted. The police found nothing so they left. A few weeks later this woman gets this court order.”

“That’s a typical Anglo-Saxon scam. The sister would have paid perhaps up to $20,000 to a barrister to get her that AVO. Her intention to isolate the rest of the family from the mother, and to start transferring wealth to her own self.” Darth explained. “Her next step once she has this temporary AVO confirmed, is to drag her mother to a lawyer and force her to sign power of attorney. The mother is likely aged, or has dementia, or can not understand English well – many reasons.”

“How can she get something like that when there is no evidence?” Helen asked.

“Ha! Evidence? Local courts are mostly bullshit! The first part of the scam is to claim you will bring so many witnesses. When the hearing comes, you in fact have no witnesses. But the fact that you claim to have witnesses gives some credibility to your claim. No, it’s a joke. If you want proper courts you need to mortgage your house to pay for lawyers who take matters to the Supreme courts. Local courts are the biggest money making enterprises of all the Anglo-Saxon scams. As to AVOs, these are a private laws. The police can apply for these in genuine cases, when there is clear evidence of assault. But any solicitor can apply for such, for any reason, that is why I call it a private law. If you don’t mind me saying, you are somewhat naive. This is Anglo-Saxon shit that runs the court system. The shit is about money, about control, about domination – it is not about facts or truth except when this suits. In fact, a reliable instrument like a lie detector is banned in Anglo-Saxon courts. The last thing the shit wants in their courts is proper facts or truth – that only takes place on television.” Darth explained.

“Wow!” Helen exclaimed. “Your suit is rather well cut. There is money in this type of research you do?” Helen studied the man carefully. He had vented his feeling to her and she was not sure as to the reason. Did something compel him to say all that? Why, she wondered.

“No, that’s a private passion…or obsession.” Darth replied. “I work for a bank, making deals on loans. I don’t have to go into the bank usually, just now and then. I get my appointments on my computer – well, it’s the bank’s computer but in my custody - or telephone. What specifically interests me are these types of AVOs so clearly intended to begin fraud against the elderly, the incapacitated, the victims of dementia or Alzheimer’s, or those overseas. In my line of work now and then a scam comes to my attention. I have this computer program that monitors hearings in courts, and when a name comes up of a person I talked to about a loan or refinancing and the like, I take an interest.”

Helen was only half listening. She was drawn to this man and was becoming fascinated. What he had said about his mother struck her as absolutely true. For this reason alone, she was already admiring the mother – and if she admired the mother, then perhaps the mother’s own flesh and blood was also someone a Jew could trust and respect.

“Wow,” Helen said, “how can they get away with that?”

“See that thing?” Darth pointed to a police officer standing near one of the doors, “a mindless individual who is about forcing down peoples throats orders of courts. Typical IQ of a general police officer is 90 – that’s well below average. Only soldiers, whom psychologists have found have a typical IQ of 75, are more dangerous in terms of a natural primeval instinct at work. Such a low intelligence can be brainwashed to even kill in the name of the religion of law. Such things don’t think, they don’t reason, they are zealots and fanatics of the religion of law. They are there to force down your throat orders of courts. About 15,000 in Australia and they are there, in my opinion, mainly to protect the Anglo-Saxon shit that runs the legal system.”

A court officer came out of the hearing room. “Ladies and gentlemen. Please go home. The magistrate had an accident in his car on the way over and is in hospital. Nothing too serious but all hearings will have to be rescheduled.”

Darth stood as did Helen. She turned to Darth. “Can we have coffee? Please? I would like to understand as much as I can about this.”

Darth smiled. “I don’t know if a woman with your legs should be propositioning strangers.”

Helen focused into his eyes – the thought “you are not bad yourself” crossed her mind and in an intense way but she refrained from revealing her thought - and she waited before replying. She smiled. “Long time since my husband said something like that. Please?”

“Sure. As long as you tell me something about being a Jew. Am curious about religious traditions – in fact, am curious about many things.” Darth replied. “There are lots of coffee places in Parramatta.”

They walked downstairs, talking about where their cars were parked and which coffee place they might want to visit. Helen mentioned she also wanted to do some shopping in the large Westfield plaza. They decided to take their cars which were parked in the same small parking area near the court house.

“What a car!” Helen exclaimed when she saw the large white car, a top of the range super luxury model, that Darth walked to. “Sure you are not a successful barrister yourself?”

“Not mine exactly. The bank pays for it as well as the fuel. Mind you, I wanted a Holden. It is an Australian bank; a Holden is an Australian car; but no, they would not have a bar of that and came up with this ever so expensive European number. Shall I follow you or you me?” Darth asked.

“You me. Mine is the small red Mazda.” Helen pointed to her car. “It is only a month old.”

“A bubble car. That is what my daughter, she is young, called it when she first saw it.” Darth glanced at her car. The car looked fine, and was a good car as far as Darth heard. It was a small sedan and its overall appearance gave a faint impression of a bubble.

“It’s pretty. I love it.” Helen smiled and walked off to her car.

Chapter 2 - Sophia

A week later Helen rang and asked if Darth had some time to talk to Sophia in person. Darth was more than interested and after negotiations and checking his scheduled appointments, it was agreed that Darth would come around the following morning. Helen gave him the address.

Helen met him outside Sophia’s house. She was dressed as attractively as the first time they met.

“Hi.” She smiled. “My house is not far so I walked. After, I would like to know your thoughts. Could we perhaps drive to the plaza for a coffee?”

“Sure.” Darth smiled.

They walked inside. A pleasant middle aged woman answered the door. The way she was, the slow movements of her arms, her manner and voice, told Darth at once she was the typical “victim” of the AVO scam.

Darth and Helen waited in the lounge room while Sophia made tea and brought cakes. Helen explained that Sophia lived with her husband and older children who had not as yet left home.

“You are not a Jew?” Sophia said nicely as she put a tea down in front of Darth.

“No, Catholic.” Darth replied. “Of course, Jesus was a Jew, and I have a touch of a passion for understanding what Jews were like back then.”

“They would have been different to modern Jews, I am sure.” Sophia sat down, smiled, then wiped a tear from her eyes. “Helen said you are pursuing these types of scams as you called them. I did not do anything except yell at my sister after she yelled at me. Then when I was washing my mother in her bed, police arrive. Apparently my older sister called them saying she was assaulted.”

“A typical way the scam works.” Darth nodded. “She must have a motive? What financial or personal gain does she have to gain from this?”

“I don’t know…wait,” Sophia was sad about all this, “to think my own sister would do this…that hurts so much…and it is all so embarrassing…on that AVO there is a reference to myself not touching my mother’s ATM card. No idea what the point of that is.”

“Usual aspect of the scam,” Darth replied, “the Anglo-Saxon courts at the local court levels work on credibility. The culture as a whole is stupid, it has to be persuaded in such a way as to believe because it simply has no deeper capacity to understand facts and truth. It can not put patterns together well, it can't see past a simple motive. It can not easily unravel facts or truth, so it is about credibility and image. The most important aspects of the scam is to try to smear you – suggesting for example you gamble and use your mother’s ATM card for this is one technique.”

“I don’t do that.” Sophia shook her head.

“Does not matter what the truth or facts are,” Darth shook his head, “the point is to suggest you are not a fit person to assist your mother and to isolate you from her. Besides the ATM, has your mother a will?”

“My mother has Alzheimer’s,” Sophia replied, “she is lost in a world of her own now. In the only will she made long ago, she left everything to her children. She does not own much other than a house in the Western suburbs. She should be in a nursing home I feel but I wait until I can not cope anymore. I don’t understand why I can not see her? I can not help doing that – she is my mother. I know I will see her.”

“That is what the Anglo-Saxon shit is counting on. You breaking the AVO. They put burdens on people impossible to bear then scream you are a criminal and drag you before courts. The shit has been doing this since 1945. Mindless thugs with guns called police make it possible.” Darth explained.

“What Darth means,” Helen smiled, “is that this type of scam is well established, has been well rehearsed, and many things are put in place to ensure that AVO becomes permanent.”

“This is not humane!” Sophia began to cry.

“The Anglo-Saxon is a piece of shit. Barely has any feelings. An isolated culture with a mindset not much higher than of advanced animals. What the shit is after is people spending hundreds of thousands on their Supreme courts. That is where they make a killing financially. The whole legal system is engineered in that way.”

Sophia was becoming more upset and Helen felt this was enough and they best leave. They stood, thanked her for her hospitality, and left.

Outside by the car Helen too was upset. “Can you see why I was so upset by this?”

Darth pointed to two police officers in a car that was passing. “See those things? They don’t care if they have to shoot you to force down your throat that twisted and perverted religion of law. Mindless animals with guns, dedicating their life to protecting the rich from the poor. Stupid enough not to understand how blatantly corrupt the Anglo-Saxon legal system is. Granted, they do invaluable community service – but unemployed teenagers could do that work at a fraction of the cost and would get a head start in life and community support. No, the Anglo-Saxon needs professional thugs with guns, mindless shit called police to ensure they can trade in court orders as they have since 1945.”

“Your passion is strong.” Helen gave him a smile. “I admire you. I have a similar passion but it has to do with Jewish Life in the Spirit and their court system and law. Like you, in that regard, I am a fighter.” Helen said. “Will you drive me back? But first let’s stop at the plaza for a coffee.”

“Pleasure.” Darth replied and clicked a button on his key to unlock the car.

Chapter 3- Courage

Two weeks passed. Helen could not get the AVOs out of her head. Sometimes while she washed dishes ideas came; sometimes while she watched television; sometimes when she helped her daughters with homework. In the end she gave Darth a call saying she is so troubled by this whole experience that it is depressing and what can be done about it. Darth suggested she meet him outside a local court house the next day. One not far from where she lived. There was a hearing, or a preliminary one, that involved one of his past clients and had to do with an AVO and he had scheduled this in his diary. Helen agreed.

They met outside. Helen did not wear her red ladies suit but instead a black light top and a dark blue skirt.

“Wow, you look ever so elegant each time I see you.” Darth greeted her as she waited for him.

“Thank you.” She smiled and, without thinking, gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Let’s go inside, I want to show you something.” Darth said and they walked inside. Helen walked with hands behind holding a white handbag. The woman was lovely, she had grace and style, and eyes of men of all ages could not help taking a look as she walked past.

Darth was explaining as they headed to a particular court room. “Every Tuesday in this particular court they have the first AVO hearings. Not a proper hearing. The only point of this is to make sure the person who was handed one of these, signs a court document saying he understands what they are. See those people sitting in this room? A bigger queue than in Woolies supermarkets. See the men with suits? Their lawyers. These are all AVO cases. Most are victims of scams. A few AVOs are genuine. The genuine are the ones police apply for. The genuine ones involve serious violence usually. The vast majority are bullshit, utter nonsense. Wait until you hear what some of the idiotic reasons people come up with. Problem is they go to a lawyer with an issue. The lawyer suggests an AVO. A preliminary step to get almost any court order they want – as long as they have lots of money to pay for barristers. One of the most developed Anglo-Saxon scams is about to reveal itself to you. Let us sit down and listen. Getting an AVO also instantly damages someones credibility. These courts don’t think - they are not about protecting anyone except their own huge money making schemes.”

They sat, waited, and listened. The more she heard, the more aghast she was. At one point she stood up and yelled at the presiding magistrate. “Listen! Are you a fool! What I heard so far is less inventive than kindergarten children when they want to blame someone. What kind of disgusting human signs court orders that separate children from mothers!”

Two court officers came as quickly as they could from the side and Helen was asked to leave. They escorted her all the way outside the court, with Darth holding his brief case following.

Outside Darth shook his head. “Wow! I love you! You have courage. A hundred like you and I would have an army that can conquer this shit called the police force that protects the Anglo-Saxon thrash.”

“Sorry, I lost it.” Helen gulped.

“No, no,” Darth was walking around her most excited by what he had seen, “no, no, don’t say that….I once lost it myself and called a magistrate a bullshit artist and why doesn’t he admit it? I too was escorted out. The shit will not charge anyone with contempt because they are scams, and they don’t want the scams publicly exposed or in superior courts – you are just asked to leave. It is a pretty safe thing to do.”

“You did?” Helen’s eyes lit up.

“Sure did! But you were more impressive than me and so natural! Right, I owe you the most expensive lunch you ever had. Where shall we eat?” Darth was as excited as a puppy might be when his master returns home. “If I wore a hat I would toss it down and jump all over it!”

“You are so excited…come on.” She put her hand around his upper arm and they walked off toward a large shopping plaza. “Stop that!” She said a few times, laughing herself, as Darth clearly had trouble controlling his exuberance at what he had witnessed.

Chapter 4 – At the Races

Darth had learned that almost every last weekend of the month Frank was away and Helen left the girls with her sister Elaine who had no children as yet and absolutely adored the girls. Helen had been doing this for years.

On such a Saturday morning Darth gave Helen a call.

“Hi. Listen. These AVOs are on you mind more than one mine,” Darth said, during the week Helen had rang him a number of times with ideas she had. “I want to show you something. Any chance you can meet me at Rosehill racecourse? Today is a special race day which true punters always go to.”

“Sure.” Helen closed her eyes wondering if she said “yes” far too quickly. Darth gave her the instructions where to wait for him, or he will wait for her.

An hour and half later Helen found the spot. Darth was already waiting.

“Don’t you look divine!” Darth said.

Helen smiled. Races were “dress up” days for ladies so Helen put on a rather stylish top and a light floral skirt. She came closer, hesitated, then stepped very close and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Hi.”

“What I want to show you is in confidence,” Darth put his arm around her waist as they moved off, “there are tens of thousands of people here so this will not be easy. I want to find a man I had seen once. Help me spot a small man, rather fat, and likely to have two tall men near him with an exercise book in their hands. If my hunch is right, we will find him.”

It was hard to move. The crowd continually enlarging. Darth explained as they tried to spot the three men. “About seven months ago I had this business client. Owned a small stable with two racing horses. Wanted a commercial loan to develop his stables. When I first met him and he showed me his balance sheets, I had to say I did not know anything about this business. He insisted I come to the races and he will tell me about it. So I did. When there, I spotted a magistrate with two tall men. As me and the client were walking past, I chanced to glance at the book in which one of the tall guys was writing numbers. I was ever so curious!”

“And?” Helen asked. The crowd was huge and often enough they had to stop, unable to move, and were pushed against one another.

“Love your perfume!” Darth said on one such occasion when their bodies were pressed right into one another as a group tried to head to the betting booths and were pushing rudely everyone else to the side. “Not to mention,” Darth said nervously, “your breasts at the moment are pressing right into me and…”

“Sorry.” Helen said, she was being squashed and was right against him and even put her hand on his shoulder because she wasn’t sure where to put it.

“Sorry?! It’s a thrill - sorry, had to say that.” Darth replied, putting his arm around her shoulder to protect her from a hulk of a man trying to squeeze past Helen.

“That works both ways, you know.” Helen looked into his eyes.

When they had some room to move they continued. Darth was about to give up - there were far too many people in this huge covered area; it was far too noisy from continual boom from the public address system commentating on a race in progress. Then Darth stopped.

“There! That one. Near that booth. Let’s sneak closer and see if we can hear their conversation.” Darth took her hand and they squeezed through the crowd to stand behind the three studying a board with race lists.

They could not hear much of what the three said. Helen noticed one of the tall men open his exercise book and write a number in it. At this time another group of punters were going past, between Darth and Helen and the three, pushing them rudely right to the side and after they lost sight of the three.

“Never mind,” Darth said, “let’s go for a coffee on the terrace and I will explain what I know.”

They made their way, not easy, into an area on the outside with white tables and very clear views of the races. A waiter blocked their path. “Minimum order is $50 to sit at the table.”

“Yeah, all right.” Darth said.

“You have to pay a deposit of $50.” The waiter was not moving out of their way.

“Fine.” Darth took out his wallet and handed the bank’s credit card.

“Gold!” The waiter remarked as he took it and quickly unclicked a golden rope to let them through. “That table over there sir, a good view, I shall bring an imprint for you to sign to your table.”

They sat down. Darth took out a white sheet of paper from his suit top and gave it to Helen, then turned to the waitress who came. “Two coffees, some cakes, and…and…I guess we need to spend the 50”, he turned to Helen, “maybe lunch?”

“A touch early but all right.” Helen smiled, she studying the page, “you order for me dear. I will eat whatever you order.”

The waitress waited. Darth scanned the menu.

“What would you wife like?” The waitress asked.

Darth glanced at Helen who smiled but did not look up or say anything. “Uhm, he said, uhm, just a meat pie with chips and salad – one for me and one for my…wife…and two beers.”

The waitress wrote this down and walked away. Helen looked up and laughed. “How exciting a lunch is that!”

“Judging by these prices, they want 15 for a pie, the total might be more than 50.” Darth leant forward.

“That’s disgraceful.” Helen replied. “So what is this list? Names of horses, and races, and an amount next to a horse – 2,000 or 5,000 or even one 10,000?”

“Ah.” Darth explained. “The first time I spotted these three, even though I was with a client, but he seemed to know lots of people and often someone would stop and take him aside and exchange a word, while I was watching that magistrate, I saw one of the men head to the toilet. Before he went in, he looked around for a place to leave his exercise book and put it on the side of a table. Quick as a flash I am over there and opening the book, I see the last page, a quick turn to make sure no one is watching and I take my mobile phone and take a picture. That is the page I took a picture off.”

“That is a photo? Came out very well.” Helen said.

“The mobile phone has this super camera. The bank has the mobiles especially made for us. Sometimes we need to photograph a document so even in dim light this camera will take a good picture. In this business, if you ask a client to fax a document chances are he will misplace it or is too busy to do it and it can delay a loan application for months. So, I take a copy of everything I need to attach to a loan application at the time.” Darth explained.

“Have you worked out what these numbers are?” Helen smiled, thinking to herself that this man was resourceful.

“Well, yes, but this is what stumped me.” Darth moved his seat closer to Helen so he could point to some of the columns, “these are the names of horses. The number in the middle, I worked that out and validated, are court hearing numbers this magistrate had scheduled. That amount of money here has to be a direct bribe. I looked up the details of all these cases and they were all 50/50 type cases - no clear cut evidence one way or the other. So this guy gets this amount of money from this law firm, that’s their partial name in that column, if he rules in their favour. That is the only explanation. But, the obstacle that gave me a headache for days is – all those horses in those columns are long shots. Absolute long shots! And I checked, none of them won or came anywhere near winning that particular race – that race number in that column. That does not make sense!”

“Hmm.” Helen smiled at the waitress who brought the food. Darth moved his white metal chair back to be opposite Helen. They began to eat.

“Maybe,” Helen had an idea, “it is the total that counts? That’s about 95,000 on that page. Maybe, just speculating, a syndicate gets that money and when a certain amount has been put on horses which belong to that syndicate, the syndicate arranges a bet for the magistrate, on the horse the magistrate wants in a particular race. I mean a huge bet, perhaps a tenth of what he paid them?”

“Hmm. That’s good. I was absolutely stumped and had no understanding what it meant.” Darth nodded. “Any more ideas how this might work?”

Helen smiled and leant forward. “So I am not just a pretty face? I can be useful to you?”

“Pretty face? What an understatement. You have a divine body!” Darth replied.

“Here.” Helen leant forward and said quietly. “Can you look up this magistrate’s bank account?”

“No, I mean, tried, but he does not bank with us.” Darth took out of his pocket three small gadgets. “Have a look at these? They are always on me or in my safe. Security devices. Can not connect any computer, not even the bank’s own laptop, to the bank’s computers without these. That small gadget even knows my fingerprint and will not work for anyone else. That one needs a number sequence and I have ten seconds to enter it.”
