Helmut barked and Morgenstern quieted him with a "Helmut, still!"
As Morgenstern stood with his knees against the glass and cautiously peered over the edge of the rocky cliff, he saw what appeared to be a scuba diver in a wet suit. The diver was laboriously scaling the nearly sheer face of the cliff.
"Shit!" The doctor pulled his cell phone from his pocket and punched in numbers.
"Montero Police Services, Arabelle Swenson speaking. How may I direct your call?"
"Ara - Arabelle? Yes. Listen, this is Dr. Morgenstern speaking. I live up here in at -"
"Oh, Dr. Morgenstern. Sure. You live in that big brick house. Everybody knows who you are."
"Yes. Well, listen, as you know this is private property. I have it fenced but right now on the ocean side, there's a swimmer climbing up the cliff. Now it may be nothing. Maybe he's just lost, but I'd feel a lot better if you send an officer out to establish a presence and explain to the man that this is a private compound."
"A man - my. You talk fast. A man is climbing up the cliff from the ocean?"
"Correct. I want an officer out hereﾅjust in case."
"Oh. Yes, all right, Dr. Morgenstern. I'm sure there's nothing to be afraid of."
"I'm not afraid." He was becoming exasperated. His fingers tightened on the cell phone. "I - just get someone -"
"I'll send someone out right away. Shouldn't take ten minutes."
"Ten -?
"Have a nice day sir." With that the phone went dead and Dr. Morgenstern peered over the cliff's edge again. The diver was a third of the way up, working slowly and laboriously to find one small handhold after another.
Dr. Morgenstern brought up his wife's number but she didn't answer.
