"Roy, what'd Daddy always tell us about Sport?" Jeff asked, feeling the anger and adrenaline inside. Sport was the German Shepherd that Roy and Jeff grew up with. Jeff knew Clyde wouldn't support his confronting Hiram. Maybe he could build consensus with Roy, he thought.
Calmly, quietly, he brother said, "Clyde, Sport taught Day somethin' real important. He'd go out runnin' around with the local dogs. Sooner or later, they'd get to fightin' amongst theirselves. Sometimes he'd win the fight and sometimes he wouldn't. Most of the time, Sport was outnumbered. When he saw things was gettin' too hot, he'd start runnin' toward home. And, sure enough, they'd chase him. That was, till he got up here on the bank." Roy turned and looked at his brother, fear and fire building in his eyes. "He knew where home was, and when he got up here on the bank, he turned and stood. Win, lose, or draw, he'd gone as far as he could. They might carry 'im out, but they wouldn't run 'im out."
