Assigned to U.S. Pacific Command in the wake of 9/11, Army Reserve intelligence officer Captain Chris Gates believes he has been sentenced to the backwater in the war on terrorism. But when a video tape discovered in an Al Qa’ida camp in Afghanistan reveals a plot to bomb U.S facilities in Southeast Asia, Gates is sent to work with Singapore’s intelligence services to track-down the terrorists before they can strike.
Working with Captain Jessica Ling, a street-wise Singaporean intelligence officer, Gates finds himself drawn into her obsession with capturing the mysterious Jemmah Islamiya bomb-maker known only as "Khalid”. Not until she is assigned as Gates’ control officer on a mission to rescue a wounded agent from Indonesia does he begin to realize that in the world of international terrorism, there are no allies, only interests…
While many fiction novels inspired by the war on terrorism are pure fantasy, Without Reserve: A Novel of the War on Terror strips away the hype to demonstrate that in war, there are no allies; only interests. Watching the war on the evening news, many imagine great conspiracies countered by elite forces armed with technological wonders. But the truth is the war is being fought by people cast by circumstances into critical roles, armed simply with a borrowed weapon, questionable allies, and an instinct for survival. Success is often accidental and no one will ever admit what he did when it's all over.
Written for a mainstream audience, Without Reserve focuses on the reality of war and the effect of war on those who fight it. It is based largely on the author’s experience as an intelligence officer operating in Southeast Asia in the wake of 9/11.
Excerpt
There was a chill in the early morning breeze, a hint the autumn of an era was fast approaching. Leaves exploded in hues of bullion and burgundy as Chris Gates jogged lost in thought along the trail hugging Cherry Creek. Traffic congealed on downtown streets following the meandering course of the stream. From beneath the eastern horizon, a glow backlit Denver’s skyscrapers, casting shadows that formed long black fingers closing unnoticed around him.
War never begins the way you’d expect.
