As introduction to MOD, the book covers some basic approach that will enable anyone to follow and understand within the materials provided without the need for advanced knowledge of the subject or the need for higher academic qualifications. For this reason, the book is written with the above aim in mind. Obviously, this does not mean that a student doing a degree or even a researcher within this field may not benefit from it, rather the opposite is true. This is mainly because the simple approach used in explaining and presenting the subject meant everyone can benefit from the materials provided within all the pages of this book.
Universal evolution involves everything, whether in the form of biological evolution (species, including us as humans) or as simple as the designing of manufactured products, i.e. the evolution of life and things - meant nothing to stay the same but everything changes.
The process of updating, which is another word which can be used describing evolving, is happening, and progressing all the time, whether we are aware of it or not. This process can be noticed clearly years later or by the future generations, looking back to what was in the distant past that differ in various ways to what is taking place at the present time.
The evolution of the human mind, in principals, follow similar cycles of development. Which means our understanding of ourselves and things around us, individually, or part of the society, play a major role on how our future may developed and shaped. Which means that our external environment plays major role in our evolution. As part of our learning, humans from ancient time contemplate or worshiped or mimicked what nature provided. By doing so, it was, and still, part of our learning process and consequently part of our evolution.
As we are born out of this natural environment, our sense of belonging and curiosity does not divert us from what nature provided us with. Our bodies are nothing, but biological machines equipped with what is needed to survive in this Earthly environment. Our five senses are vital and essential development evolved to the level we have them at this part of our time. The ability to be able to smell is one of these five senses which plays an important part in our bodily function and safety. However, trying to replicate this function within a machine is another matter, even if the success in this field, which is already happening right now, bring great benefits to our daily lives, the development will continue. This is a basic fact of the humans’ mind and their search continuously for better outcome. Having said that, by focusing in this book on this sense and replicated the function within a device, is a very small step within a large global scale presently pushing forward within the field research and development for better outcome. Therefore, this book is just another example within a field that many researchers, writers, and developers tread this path long before the idea of the first attempt made many decades ago trying to design MOD.

Finally, the new MOD design provided, as well as the discussion and analysis in various parts of the book, both are mainly to encourage further the learner in this field, whatever level or stage in his/her life might be, in pursuing this kind of technology further, whether in the form of new ideas, new design, additional research or even a new career in this field may further help in advancing this vital technology for a variety of important needs and aspects in our present and future lives.
Excerpt
To understand MOD basic design as well as functions, a general examination of gas sensing systems have been looked at first. The gas sensing systems in this chapter provided a general discussion and analysis of various sensers. This in turn helped to open the way for the examination of individual devices, such as catalytic combustion, which is used mainly for its reliability and simplicity in detecting variety of flammable gases/vapours. The photo ionization detector (PID), which uses ionization method, is used in assessing chemical danger, in addition to other functions. Flame Ionization Detector (FID) is used to detect compound from a flame produced by the combustion of hydrogen and air. This device is characterised as a stable with good repeatable results, as well as it has a wider detecting range. The mechanism of the metal-oxide semiconductors (MOS), on the other hand, were described as well as the listing of advantages and disadvantages for the above sensors also provided. In addition to the above, manufacturing process has been explained.
Conducting polymers function and use also discussed.
Other parts of Chapter One discussed Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM). QCM is one of the most sensitive mass sensors that is capable of measuring mass changes in the nanogram range. Finally, Smart Sensors and problems connected to sensors in general, also covered.
