For 12-year-old Carly Baillie, moving into a new house, so far away from her grandparents and friends, was a big adjustment. She hadn't even moved in yet and she was homesick. The new house in the mountains was huge--a big log cabin with four bedrooms, one of them for Carly alone--a special room with its own balcony. A room she wouldn't have to share with her witchy sister Jackie. It took a week to get unpacked and settled in, with Jackie doing little but complaining the entire time. Just as things settled down and life became more normal, weird things started to happen: creaking wood, footsteps in an empty hallway, chilly rooms, slamming doors. Then Carly heard the rumors going around town-their new house was haunted! "Carly's Ghost" is very vibrant with detail-descriptions that vividly paint the story with very few words. The dialogue is appropriate for the age of the story's intended readers and very natural. This is a well-written book that should appeal to any pre-teen ghost story lover, it did Mandy: "Carly's Ghost was cool. Carly was very smart and cool and real. I could picture this girl as being one of my best friends. I don't have a big sister, but I sure did feel bad for her having a sister like Jackie--that girl was so mean! I think that everyone will enjoy this story about a young girl in a strange place trying to prove that it's a ghost, not her, who's torturing her sister." A Ghost Story
"Carly's Ghost" by Peggy Tibbetts is an entirely different story and suitable for younger readers (as well as older). Based partly on the author's own experiences, the story is much more charming than scary. Carly and her family move to a cabin and soon strange things begin to happen. Doors slam unexpectedly and Carly's bullying older sister keeps having small accidents that she blames on Carly. Carly does her own investigating and soon discovers a secret room, an old diary and a much loved but battered doll. In the end, she finds a friend in the ghost. The nice thing about this book, especially for younger readers, is Carly's character. Anyone with a sibling has lived through the same problems Carly has. If you're in the mood for a good, old-fashioned ghost story, then you need to check out "Carly's Ghost." Young Carly has just moved from her safe suburban life in St. Paul, Minnesota--leaving behind all her friends--to a cabin in the mountains of Colorado. Her mother, father, older sister, Jackie, and cat, Sassy, are all still with her, but she can't shake the feeling of loneliness that comes with moving to a new home. When she starts hearing noises in the night, and when strange things start happening around the house, she REALLY begins to wonder if this move was such a hot idea. She begins to investigate the house, determined to find clues to who, or what, is behind these strange occurrences. "Carly's Ghost" is the type of story you used to read under the covers with a flashlight when you were a kid (remember those days?!).
