Introduction.
Everybody can tell a story. You told several stories. When you tell your friend or your wife about what happened today in the work. This is a story.
Tell me what happened today? a wife asked her husband. She wanted to know something. She might want to know about his secretary but she preferred to know indirectly.
The husband knew his wife. He told her what happened that day without mentioning anything about his secretary. Still she had doubts because he used what storytellers call mystery, but he did not know.
Another husband wanted to give a present to his wife.
Close your eyes! he said. She did. He put a diamond ring around her finger.
Oh, dear. What a surprise! she kissed him. Then she had doubts about the cause.
She asked him, youre not used to buy me surprises without a cause. Why did buy it today? she started what storytellers call a conflict between two persons.
The phase between her question and his answer is called suspense.
He broke this suspense by telling her that he was promoted. The resolution of the suspense is that her happiness.
Tell me more, she said. She wanted to know the story of his sudden promotion. The suspense built another one. This time is without a conflict. Guess why? he played suspense before resolving it.
Did you achieve the sales targets earlier than others, she asked but the suspense is not resolved yet.
Yes and my boss asked me to nominate a secretary for him because his secretary will leave. I know that he likes my secretary. I nominated her. Ill employ another one. He told me that he will promote me and he wont wait for another six months because Im cooperative, he said. He resolved the suspense.
She felt relaxed because the beautiful secretary left her husband. At the same time, she felt annoyed about her husband hiring another one who might be more beautiful than the woman he had given to his boss. She did not like her husband doing of facilitating the approaching of his boss to beautiful woman. The contradictory feeling between her relaxation and her dislikes is a conflict inside her.
Do you think that you did the right thing? she said. She went to higher level of conflict. This is a conflict between two persons.
This is life. If I didnt I would not be promoted even after a year. Tell me why he asked me to nominate a secretary and there are six directors in the company. Im not the HR specialist. This means one thing, he defended himself. He was in a dilemma that is a choice between two bad options.
I dont like that, she went to a higher level of conflict. This is called a conflict with society.
You changed much since weve married, she said. She felt that everyday her husband became worse. She went to a conflict with fate.
Ill tell you the whole story, he said. He became a storyteller. If he wrote his memories everyday, he would become a novelist. He would have a novel about his life with his wife and his work.
As long as we talk to each other, we are storytellers. When we say facts, we tell non-fiction stories. When we give examples, we tell fictions. The talent to tell stories is just inherited in human beings. We can improve this talent. Even we can think about what is behind what we hear and see.
This book is about illustrating how to tell stories and especially novels in a better way.
