I blinked back tears, recalling our conversation, and then scanned the names on the album cover for artists of Café Violette one more time. A force outside myself told me the young man with the face of a romantic poet was Noel Matheson, the singer for track number five, “Toujours.” I counted the grooves and placed the needle on five.
Noel Matheson. This was his voice...a voice I fell in love with the instant I heard the first note. A voice piercing my soul and calling to me through time. The rest of the world faded, turned mute and opaque, leaving me in a pocket of stillness in time and space where only the two of us connected. Completing each other. Twin souls. My breath stopped for a long moment. I’d had the same thought before. Sometime in a past I didn’t know existed. I replayed the song at least ten times, although my decision had been made the moment I’d picked up the album. Or perhaps a century and a half before.
It was time for action. I spent the next hour writing the notes and lyrics and placing today’s date on sheet music for “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” in case something happened and I needed to come back here.

The paper wasn’t totally blank, it was the unused side of “Wayfaring Stranger” and I admit I took more than a few minutes to once again cry out my anguish about Jimmy and Ajay’s deaths, and that of Inez Terry as well, although I’d never actually met her. The Delegates had had a very busy week stomping out freedom fighters.
I found a copy of the sheet music to “Toujours” sitting beside a large bag on the table closest to the record player. There was a red stain in the top corner of the music, next to the date, February1941. About a month after the recording had been made. I sniffed the stain. Cranberries with a hint of orange.
I smiled and waved to the air. “Thanks, Fiona Belle. Wherever and whenever you are.”
The choice had been made. I was going back in time to Café Violette to try to save the nightclub, the owner, and Noel. Perhaps in doing so, I could even save myself.

Paris Nocturne is one the best novels I've read in some time. I literally could not put it down until finished. Cori Christopher, the feisty and talented time traveling heroine doesn't back away from danger; particularly when it comes to helping those she cares about. The main part of the story is set in 1941 Paris, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing the entire time.

Paris Nocturne has it all. A heroine to cheer for and emulate, along with a swoon-worthy honest-to-goodness hero. A villain whose pride wins over duty or beliefs and leads him further into evil. A nice mix of non-stereotypical characters, including Fiona Belle Donovan the eccentric, quirky, impish instigator of time travel. Chapters that will make you cry or rage against injustice…and others with moments that have you laughing out loud. Some plot surprises, lots of witty dialogue, and a good look at what the worlds of music and dance might have been like during the Paris Occupation. Enjoy!
