Excerpt
He saw it from the driver’s seat of his Hummer at a red light. It was a scruffy-looking man, probably in his late thirties or early forties, wearing a multi-colored windbreaker that looked like something from the late 80’s. The scruffy-looking man kept putting one foot out on the street and shading his eyes as if to be able to see far off into the distance. He did this three or four times in a thirty-second time span. The man then turned around and began talking loudly to no one while looking in every possible direction as he crossed the street.
The Man In The Hummer had a glance into the scruffy-looking man’s eyes and assumed that the scruffy guy was paranoid. The Man In The Hummer shook his head and mumbled a tsk-tsk.
Arriving ten minutes later at his office, the Man In The Hummer walked into work still contemplating the scruffy paranoid man. His secretary saw the look on his face and asked what was up.
“Aw, I saw some crazy homeless guy walking around downtown looking for someone. I don’t know what his problem was but I kinda felt sorry for him.”
“Yeah, I know what you mean. They’ve been all over the place since the hospital closed the seventh floor down.”
“The seventh floor?”
“Yeah, that’s where the hospital had its mental health unit. Budget cutbacks closed the damn place, but they had enough funds to expand the Subway franchise downstairs and redecorate the entire maternity ward.”
“I don’t get it. Where are people’s priorities nowadays?”
“You’re one to talk,” the secretary said, putting down a stack of papers that had just finished printing. “You still drive a goddamn Hummer while everyone else is getting hybrids.”
