(The Good Guys)
I've always admired the law enforcement profession. As a child I would watch in excited amazement as our car would drive by a traffic stop on a hot Texas night, Squinting through the flashing red & blue lights as my parents drove slowly by. I wanted more than anything to be wearing that uniform. To me, all cops were good, all cops cared and all cops were invincible.
Little in my life has caused me more pain than the first time I heard about a bad cop. I didn't want to believe it. They must have made a mistake, I told myself. It's not possible that a cop would steal. A cop can't sell drugs. No way could a police officer hit his wife, abuse his child. It didn't fit my version of reality.
In hindsight, I now realize that the lowest base of a pedastal I placed every cop on was too high for even the best of us to ever reach. But even now, every day I put on a uniform, I strive to reach that pinnacle. I pray that on the day I stop climbing toward it that I will have the wisdom to know it's time to leave that cherished uniform in the closet. When the hunger for perfection that every cop feels as a rookie, eager to clean up the streets, begins to waiver, it's time to get help.
Please spend one night living the life of a cop, through these pages, and then I can't wait for us to grow a little bit closer, from the distance of a badge on a traffic stop, to the safety of your home, and you'd better get buckled in tight, for, to use a famous quote, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!
