Chapter 5: The SuperPerson Syndrome.
Some people seem to have an unlimited capacity to run and run and run and add on new items and stay bouncy and healthy and fit and upbeat. These people are "SuperPeople" and they are our idols. We look at them and try to emulate them and add on more items to our lives because if someone else can do it, so we should be able to do it, too.
There are two potential answers to answer why people appear to be Supermen and Superwomen:
First: A few individuals may actually have a rare capacity to do many things at once and not suffer. This is a one-in-a-million capacity, however. Generally, even the most skilled and intelligent and talented and efficient of us get over-loaded.
Second (And this is the more likely and rational answer): They're fooling us and they are fooling themselves and they are bringing irreparable harm to their relationships and their lives.
Mother Theresa was able to be “Mother Theresa” because she was only Mother Theresa. Do you think she would have been able to accomplish everything she did if she were also Auntie Theresa pitching in with babysitting, Mommy Theresa helping with homework, or Mrs. Theresa, helping furnish the family home and building a relationship with a husband?
Maybe one person in a million can pull off The SuperPerson Syndrome and still maintain a balanced life.
For the rest of us, we fall somewhere on the bell-shaped curve of life-management. Some people will never be able to handle more than a Life Management Number of 2.5. Others may be able to hover at a 3.5. Somewhere in between these two figures lies the vast majority of the population...
