"I'm 5" by Alva Sachs, describes a little girl turning five. We are treated to a party with her friends and the excitement of the age milestone. But then, little Julie realizes that the act of turning five years old is not simultaneous with the first day of kindergarten. She must wait and she is very impatient to begin school. Every day, Julie arises only to be told it will not be the day she will go to school. And then, her older sister comes up with an idea which will help Julie in approaching the date that so excites her. Julie responds well to her sister's suggestion and, in the process, she is taught patience and planning.
The illustrations in the book are delightful. The bright multicolor pictures are attention-getting and they enhance the readability for the child. The message about how age alone does not determine the right of passage in life's experiences is one which every child must learn. The author presents the dilemma to the child reader in an understandable and compassionate manner. Parents might do well to follow the suggestion of the older sister in the book as the project is a hands-on project that most pre-kindergarteners will love to take on. The process of maturation through the waiting process will be one which will delight parents of preschool children. Although the audience for the book is limited, the messages are will appeal to many preschool children who are impatient and unable to plan for special events in their lives.

I ordered this lovely little book to read to my granddaughter who is going to start kindergarten this fall! She loved it:D The idea that the author wrote about using a calendar to X off the days until school starts is very exciting to her. The book is small and just the right size for a small child...she enjoys holding it and "reading" it herself!
I recommend this book to anyone who has a child getting ready to start school!

I'm 5 by Alva Sachs is an adorable story about a sweet little girl named Julie who's turning 5.
Julie can hardly wait for her 5th birthday. Then she will be old enough to go to school. Julie doesn't understand that it's summer vacation and she will have to wait a whole month before kindergarten begins. Each day she wakes and gets ready for school only to hear, "not today." Finally, Julie's sister gives her a calendar and shows her how to mark off the days. Now, Julie understands and can enjoy the rest of her summer. But, will she be ready when the big day arrives?
I'm 5 is charmingly illustrated by Patricia Krebs, who is a very skilled artist. Each of her images are a delight.
I'm 5 is a perfect story for children getting ready to start kindergarten, but can be enjoyed by children of all ages.
