The novel, which is set in 1989, tells the story of Manny Adams, a steel mill worker from Weirton, WV, who one day learns that everybody he knows is an android designed and built for the sole purpose of studying him to gauge his reactions to subtle social pressures in preparation of an invasion of the actual human home-planet. Manny learns this "fact" when he is confronted by another "real" (the androids’ pejorative term for humans) who explains that there are four other reals in the test group scattered somewhere across this artificial version of the planet. Manny remains skeptical until his own wife (realizing that he has been corrupted) tries to eliminate him.
Realizing that there are others like himself, Manny sets off to locate these "reals" to enlighten them as to their shared situation. The story contains themes of betrayal, alienation and loss, yet it maintains an active pace and has a thought provoking conclusion.

Corey smiled. What fools these mortals be. His children were still important to him. He was about to die. He knew he was going to die. Did he really not know that she was his enemy? Did he really not know that his children were a lie?
Corey laughed. It started as a single chuckle. Then another and another. She began to echo each "ha" with another and another again until she was guffawing at full tilt.
Manny was confused, but it was good to see her laugh. Perhaps it was all a joke. Sure, she had planned it all with Snake. He laughed a little with her. As her laughter continued, his became more relaxed. Corey was nearly in tears. She tossed her head back, and as it snapped forward on her shoulders, it seemed to explode.
But it wasn't an explosion from within. It was an explosion in one direction; away from the window and into the wall. Manny had heard the shot. He rushed to the window, and he saw the smoking gun.
Snake held the still hot rifle braced against the window sill. He leaned forward, and in answer to Manny’s question, he said, "The kids are in the shop."
