Three small bonfires burned brightly. Around them danced three figures, cloaked in black. In the center of the group was a woman, her face splotched with garish paint, her arms were raised high in the chill air.
Each person held a long pointed dagger in their hands. They stopped their singsong chanting abruptly and whirled to face Ruth. She could not make out their faces under the hoods, only the glitter of narrowed eyes.
“Uh,” she began, her heart hammering with the force of a pneumatic drill. “Uh, well. I see you’ve found the beach.”
The woman’s arms dropped to her side. The knife was still in her hand.
“Er, what a, a lovely night for a bonfire.” Ruth’s voice trembled.
The three cloaked figures began to move slowly in her direction.
“Uh, I’ll just run and get some marshmallows!” she shrieked. Ruth ran as fast as her middle aged legs would carry her.
