This is a book about an old documented haunted house that sits on the banks of the Connecticut River in the little town of Hinsdale, New Hampshire. This house was built in 1824 and still stands today. This is about the history and the real people who lived there over the years.
There is a little town on the banks of the Connecticut River in the State of New Hampshire named Hinsdale. On the bank of the river in this little New Hampshire town sits a real documented house that was built in 1824 and is still there today. It is 184 years old and steeped in history. It was even once part of the underground railroad during the civil war. This is a story of the building o fthe house through the present day. It is a story of the spirits that currently live there and how it ws that they became part of the house. It is about the people who have lived in this house from the time it was built up to the present day. The story is fiction but the house, the part this house played in history and the people who have lived in the house are real. The cover of the book is going to have the actual house on it and if you look at the windows you will be actually be able to see the spiritys that have always and still do live there. I was one of the people lucky enough to have grown up n this house. It was built in the year 1824 on the banks of the Ashuelot River in the little town of Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Hinsdale is a beautiful little village situated on the Ashuelot River about a mile above the confluence with her more majestic sister, the beautiful Connecticut River. It was built on the site of an old cemetery that was moved up on the hill on the other side of the river.
After the cellar hole was dug the teams of oxen came hauling in the huge field stones that would be the foundation. These would be the strength that would hold this house up for the next two hundred years. Rocks in a farmer’s field made the land unplowable but when turned into a wall they become stone and give unfailing strength to a house. One hundred and eighty-four years later, this foundation of field stones will testify to the skill and the determination of builders.
Over the years, this has echoed in silence the magnitude of the effort required to create this foundation. If you listen carefully today, you can still hear the grunt of the men, the bellow of the oxen, and the yell of children as they all worked together with blood, sweat and tears to create something that would out live many lifetimes.
Next came the beams made of solid oak logs that would forever stabilize this house on its fieldstone cellar. These were not cut into boards but left in the solid log form with the bark still on them. A hundred and eighty four years later, the bark was still on these logs from those mighty oaks.
When finished this house had 12 rooms including three in the attic. counter Each room had three windows for light and fresh air. All sides of the house had windows and there was not room that one could walk into that was not filled with light
It was heated with wood and later changed to coal and lighted with oil and gas. When electricity was put into the house every room had a chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
It had an outhouse attached to the kitchen so there would be no need to go outside on cold winter nights when mother nature called. I guess this could be called the forerunner of the bathrooms we have today.
The kitchen was large with a very large pantry and floor to ceiling cabinets surrounding the s in it. There was a built in ironing board which every mother that ever lived in the house sat their children on to groom their hair.
Glass french doors separated the rooms on the first floor and the living room had large wood columns separating it from one of the other rooms. Every floor of every room was crafted of hardwood including the stairs leading to the second story. Every door had crystal door knobs.
Most houses of the day had very little closet space but this house had a closet in every room including the upstairs hall and attic. There was a large walk through closet between two of the bedrooms on the second floor.
The only thing that one couldn’t see upon entering the house was the love that would make it impossible for anyone who lived in this house and called it home to ever leave it completely.
