The flames were everywhere, licking at his face, grasping at his clothes, pulling the very breath from his lungs, but Shaun didn’t, couldn’t, stop. He pulled his shirt over his nose desperately trying to steal away some air from the ravenous fire, desperately trying to steal back what little family he had left. The fire crackled at his feeble attempts to break through to the stables and the animals beyond. “Blaze,” he called out with his mind as his eyes failed in front of the heated assaults of smoke and embers.
“Shaun,” she answered back.
“Blaze, I can’t see, I can’t find my way,” he thought numbly as the flames began to bite into the exposed skin of his face and hands. The dragon answered immediately trilling loudly though the popping embers. She met him halfway a glowing image of green and red, a beacon of hope in his hell. She led him through the maze of fire into the weakening beams of the stable and the fear crazed stallion inside. “Tempest!” Shaun shouted above the flames hoping that his voice alone could break the horse out of his stupor. He hoped in vain. Tempest reared back his hoofs scraping the air, threatening to break down what little support the engulfed stables still owned. The air around the three figures began to smell of burning hair and scorching flesh as the heat increased two-fold, the very air around them becoming toxic to their lungs. Shaun began to despair of ever escaping this evident end when a woman’s angry scream stabbed through his sensitized mind and into his ears even above the roar of the fire. For the second time that night his heart stopped as he recognized the sound of losing someone he loved.
