The Canadian military is in charge of an exchange program between Ambassadors on Earth and various species of extraterrestrials. The program has been kept secret for decades until today. Now the military is trying to eliminate the threats, and abduct the hybrid child rumored to have been produced between a relative of a former ambassador involved with the program and one of the races of extraterrestrials.
Henry Thomas was told something bad has happened Anton Stern, son of Ludwig Stern, the former Czechoslovakian Ambassador to Canada. Ludwig was a good friend to Henry when they were ambassadors in the program. The secret Henry swore to keep, and for which he signed a release and agreement form, is being disclosed by former members of the exchange program. Henry wonders how long he can maintain secrecy, and wonders how serious the accident to Anton will be.

Henry Thomas, now 55, was slumped at the edge of the bed, deep in thought.
The bathroom door opened. Marjory Thomas stepped out. At 50, she could be mistaken for someone ten years younger. She fiddled with her earrings and glanced at him as she walked to the dresser.
"You know, I think we should attend the Shelley's party, the one I mentioned last week? I think it might do you some good to get back to our old circle of friends."
Henry remained immobile.
She approached him slowly and stared.
"Henry, did you hear me?"
He eased out of what seemed like a daze. "Sorry dear. Just one of those days."
"Really?" She sat beside him, wrapping arms around shoulders. "Want to talk about it?"
"I don't think I could, even if I wanted to."
"You could give me hint."
He sighed, looking at her. "I wish I had your strength."
"Oh, come on. It can't be that bad?"
After more debating, "What if a plan you'd made years ago started unravelling because someone didn't like the conditions anymore?"
She looked at him suspiciously. "I've never heard you talk like that before."
The telephone on the night table rang.
Marjory stood and went to answer it. "Hell--Madeleine? Hi. What's... Oh my... Ok. Ok thank you. We will." She cradled the receiver. "We have to watch the news."
She grabbed remote and pressed a button before sitting beside Henry. The television turned on and Marjory worked the controller until the news appeared, showing a black Mercedes, the font end reduced to the equivalent of a broken accordion. Yellow emergency tape restricted access to the area. A blanket was seen draped over the accordion portion of the wreck.
"... the name of the victim is not being released yet," the reporter said, "but it is believed to be the body of 29 year old Anton Stern, son of Ludwig Stern, former Czechoslovakian ambassador to Canada... The nature of this fatality is unknown and under investigation."
"Oh, my god." Marjory held hand to chest. "Henrietta. She must be so devastated. I think I'm going to..." She looked at Henry rubbing his eyes as though he were trying to cope with a headache.
He looked up at her, and her stunned expression.
"Did you know about this?"
Henry seemed embarrassed. "Tell you what. Call Helen and tell her we'll accept the invitation to her party."
Marjory stood and faced him, like a mother about to scold a child. "What do you know about this accident?"
"Listen, dear. It's very complicated."
"Excuse me? You knew about it and you didn't tell me?"
"The accident. No. The reason behind it..." he raises and eye brow. "Maybe."
"What?"
"Calm down, dear."
"I can't believe what I'm hearing."
He stands and walks around. "It comes with the territory. It's just that it's never gotten this serious, and never so close to our circle."
"I can't imagine what could possibly motivate anyone to kill another person. I just can't imagine that."
"Marjory, please. Calm down."
"How can you be so calm about this? Ludwig and Henrietta were our close friends. And now you sound like, what, that it's his fault that his son's dead?"
"Ok. Step back a bit here. I've had a rough day. Maybe he died from driving drunk?" He emphasized the last point.
She looked at him as though pondering the answer.
"I just don't believe that. He was like his father for crying out loud. Besides that, I don't ever remember seeing Ludwig drunk or hearing you talk about him that way."
"Tell you what. Let's wait for word on the autopsy report before we talk about this again."
Marjory stared at him, expecting more. "You're hiding something, and I don't like it."
"Drop it Marjory, for now. Please!"
He walked passed her on way to the washroom and slammed the door.
