Excerpt

A Wonderful Question
What a wonderful question Ms. Honeywell asked,
to all of the students in her afternoon class.
What a wonderful question for someone to pose.
There is no wrong answer that anyone knows.
She said, "If you could become anything at all,
from the biggest of big things to the smallest of small?

If you could be what you desire the most;
a lion, a dinosaur, an angel, or ghost?
What would it be you most likely would choose?
Perhaps something important that people could use.
What would it be that you would like to become?
No answer is too silly or crazy or dumb."

So, if I could be anything, any time, any place,
I'd be riding an asteroid through outer space.
I could be a monster, who is ten stories tall,
if I could be anything, anything at all.
Oh yes, if I could be what I wanted to be,
I'd become a hero and I'd be on TV.
I'd save the world from some terrible beast,
destroy a thousand aliens or ten hundred at least.
Video games would have nothing on me,
if I could be what I wanted to be.

I could be a dragon or a spy in Peru.
There are so many things I'd like to do.
A doctor, a lawyer (that's what my Mom would suggest.)
but whatever I choose, I must be the best.
A wizard, a surfer, a basketball star,
A candy tycoon with a chocolatey car.
The world would be happy and completely care free,
if I could be what I wanted to be.

I could not stop thinking of this wonderful query,
Though my eyes grew tired and my body felt weary.
Soon I was sleeping and dreaming of things,
like sailing through skies with my own pair of wings.

But, it all broke apart and I started to fall,
and I could not become anything. No, nothing at all.
I thought of the people I had once known,
but in this dream I was nothing and completely alone.

I awoke with these thoughts still on my mind.
I could be many things but I never could find,
the joy and the love that I've already got.
There is no better place than this very spot.
So, if I could be what I wanted to be.
Well, I think that I'm happy with just being me.

Walking Backwards
I've been walking backwards all day long.
People think I'm crazy or something is wrong.
They think I'm sick or I carry a curse.
They can't understand why I move in reverse.
No, it's not some disease or mutant infection.
I want to influence time in a backward direction.

If I can somehow summon the powers
to take the clocks back twenty four hours.
Then once again I can be number one,
and relive a day of surprises and fun!
You see, yesterday was a special date.
A date so great I celebrate.
And yesterday is a lot more near.
I can't wait for another whole year.
I keep moving backwards… I’ve got one destination.
Yesterday’s super fun birthday celebration!!

A Good Idea!?
I don't want to brush my teeth, or my hair.
If I take off my head, then I won't have to care.
What a good idea! I'll just take off my head.
No ears, no eyes, no mouth to be fed.
No teeth, no tongue, no nose, no brain!
No reason at all to ever complain.

Without my head there'd be no work to be done!
But wait!... I wouldn't be able to play and have fun!
Maybe I'd better keep my head on my neck.
I've grown quite attached to it, so what the heck.
I guess, I'd better wash my hair and my face.
'Cause my head is something I could never replace.

Maid of Chocolate
Lucky Lucy found a stone,
one day when she was all alone.
The stone it shown with rainbow light,
a magic beam in a dream at night.
A wishing stone is what she had found,
right there in the dirt of her favorite playground.
What should she wish for? She thought for a while;
something spectacular with appeal and style.
Now, Lucy loved chocolate more than anything on earth
She thought about wishes, and what they were worth.
To be made out of chocolate would really be great!
She thought some more, just to get her thoughts straight.

Then Lucky Lucy made her wish, and rubbed her magic rock.
She felt her world tremble, with a tremendous, electric shock.
Lucy saw her hands and arms then ran to the bathroom mirror.
Could this be really possible, was she really seeing clear?!
Yes, She was made of chocolate so rich, and fine, and sweet.
Lucy felt delicious from her head, down to her feet.
She couldn't wait to tell her friends Debbie, Sue, and Mandy.
She couldn't wait to tell the world, she was a maid of candy.
She danced out the door proud of her sweet physique.
But her friends laughed at her as though she were a freak.

Perhaps she should have realized… a wish is too wonderful to waste.
Lucy never considered every kid would want a taste.
Jon nibbled on her elbow. "Wow, Lucy sure tastes great!"
Then everyone tried to take a bite until Lucy shouted, "Wait!"
They had chewed upon her elbow her arms, and knees, and feet.
"If you don't stop,” she cried. "There’ll be nothing left to eat!"

The chocolate girl went off to hide beneath the basement stair.
She saw her chewed up body and her twisted chocolate hair.
Lucy often bit her nails when she was nervous or uptight.
So, she sat there beneath the stair… chewing fingers through the night.
By morning she had eaten her right shoulder arm and side.
She ate right through the chocolate goo… that had oozed out from inside.
She ate her hips, her thighs, and knees; her feet, and then her toes.
She went then to her chocolate face and began to eat her nose.
She swallowed her cheeks, her eyes, her ears, and hair.
Then started on her left side, but something strange was there.
Wrapped tightly in her fingers, inside her chocolate hand,
was the magic, glowing, wishing stone, awaiting her command.
What luck for Lucky Lucy; a chance to make things right.
And do you know what she wished for, in that early, morning light?
You rarely get a second chance for wishes to come true.
So, Lucky Lucy thought awhile, and knew what she had to do.

She wished with all her heart and soul and POOF it came to pass.
No better way to enjoy chocolate than with milk in a frosty glass!
There may be a lesson here, maybe, Lucy was just too young.
But all that is left of Lucy now, is her chocolate teeth, and tongue.
Be careful what you wish for, and what you say and do.
Yes, be careful what you wish for, your wish just might come true.
