“Don’t you believe me? They won’t work. Here, if you don’tbelieve me, then you try.” He took the keys from her hand, and in hiseyes there was a twinkle. Then he became a little puzzled because hecould not get the keys to open the car door either.“You aren’t kidding! They won’t work.” He tried a couple of times and stood there shaking his head, exasperated. Finally he spoke.“You can leave your car here overnight and we can figure something out. Hopefully your keys will turn up or we can call a tow truck or something tomorrow. I am assuring you that your car will be finehere in my parking lot overnight.” She thanked him and wished him a pleasant evening. Her mother dropped her off at the apartment because she did have a spare apartment key, but she barely slept that night. In the morning when she awoke, she reached into her purse.The keys were inside it lying right on the top of her other things in the purse, right in her purse that she had emptied twice and could not find them that last evening. Mitch had even felt the purse. He saidthat he would never go through a woman’s purse, but he felt around the outside and they were not in there. Had someone taken them at some point in the evening and then put them back in there before her mother had stopped down with the keys? Had he? She really didn't know how it was possible that she had emptied the purse twice and they were not in there and then in the morning they were sitting right on top of everything else in her purse. It was so strange and yet humorous, and she had to tell him.She stopped by on her way home from work to tell him later that evening. His office door was open and he was very studiously reading. He looked like a scholar with the pressed collar of his white shirtand his dark brown hair. He was looking handsome as usual, and she told him how she found the keys in her purse in the morning, and he laughed. “I will never let these keys out of my sight again.” He put his hand on her shoulder. His eyes shimmered like those little diamond pools, but she only stayed there for a little while. He went to the window to look out at the street and at her car. Something was unusual about that evening. Something was different in how he was acting.Like he knew something. Like he was really thinking about the thingsthat she had said and about the different things that had happened. Almost like he knew that when she said something was happening even though it may have sounded impossible to him, it really was happening and she did not lie. Even if he knew that before, now it really sank in. When she said strange things are happening, they most certainly are. They learned a lot of things about each other in a short time. That is how it was and that is how it would continue. They knew things they never had to say to each other............................................
She was proud of herself and had good feelings because she had said the things she needed to say, but struggled with thoughts about thelonely feeling of never being allowed to go there again. Immediately she would think of him and what he was doing. The thoughts would come even though she did not want to think of him. It was strange.She would be playing with the twins and it would seem that she could see and hear him back home playing or would feel the things that were happening to him. She would shrug it off. But sometimes it was so strong and she would think of what he should do and if she were there what she would tell him to do. One night while still living in Connecticut she had a dream of Mitch, and he was standing in his restaurant looking up at the ceiling and calling her name aloud. He was so scared, and his hands were trembling; he clenched them tightly against his sides. He was telling her there was a fire, and up in Connecticut she could see the fire burning in his building. Flames traveling up the walls and lots of billowy black smoke, and she could feel the heat from the flames and could feel him shaking. She could hear him saying, “Oh, thank God, the police and the firemen are here now. Everything is ok. I’m ok.” It was not until many weeks later that she found out that there was a fire in Mitch’s restaurant that exact day at that exact time and she knew it. She was in another state and nine hours away from him, but it was as if she was there with him through it all.........................................
“Had I known everything I knew today, I would have stopped it before it got so out of hand.”He put his hand on Mitch’s shoulder. “Mitch, you could not have known. I know you would have stopped it if you had. I think Devra knows that.”“I know she does. Now she does. She knows I would have stopped it if I had known.”
“Did Bill tell you?” He looked at his nephew, shaking his head.“Oh, you did not hear? Some girl stopped in here earlier today. She said to give this to you.” The bartender pulled a pile of things from behind the bar and set them in front of Mitch. It was a picture of Devra and someone had written with red marker all over it. It was apicture from the beach. “Oh, and she brought this too.” He lifted up a pink baby blanket and sand fell from it.” It was filled with sand like it had been on the beach or something.“Oh my God. Who brought it?” He swallowed hard and took theblanket in his hands. “Why won’t they just leave her alone?” Hisback and shoulders hurt. “What did she look like, the girl that broughtit?” “I never saw her before. Did you, Bill?” He shook his head no. “She was good-looking. Dark hair, kind ofcurly, about down to here.” He marked with his hand about half-way down his arm.“Any resemblance to Mona?” “No. She was just kind of ordinary looking. She was neither too fat nor too thin. It was pretty strange, though. She said to give it to you and she knew your name.” “What is going on?” He shook his head. “This blanket is from when Devra was in Connecticut. They must have followed her up there too. I’ve got to warn her somehow. Why are they doing this? Something is really strange. Feels bad.”
