The whisper of leaves still muted by the heaviness of rain, hummed in subtle accompaniment to the distant rumble of waves. She paused, drawing in the rich complexity of aromas carried on the freshly scrubbed air.
“Grrrrrrr…” split the serenity. Her breath caught, a sliver of ice sliding down her spine. “What the hell?” she whispered. The low rumble continued. It sounded like a dog the size
of a four by four. No, it had to be bigger than that. A bear? Some wild animal, for sure. Her flesh went cold.
“Chchchchchcoooo chchchcaaaaa” in throaty, Hebraic consonants, and at a volume so outrageous her ears seemed to crack into shards.
She bolted toward the doorway like a sprinter starting an Olympic event. Her impact against a large body just inside the shadow of the bungalow knocked her to the floor.

This was a beautiful short story about two people, both tormented by their own various demons, thrown together in a bungalow in Hawaii. At first, they don't really like each other. Chellie's friend promised she'd have the bungalow all to herself, so she could have some alone time after her father's death. Cameron, an over worked movie star, arrives at the same bungalow for some downtown at the insistence of his agent (Chellie's friend's ex-boyfriend). Of course, the bungalow is in the middle of nowhere and leaving in the middle of the night isn't so simple - especially when they hear a wild animal growling in the trees above. It isn't long before sparks fly and these 'reluctant companions' began to enjoy each other’s company.
I really enjoyed this short story. The author captures the spirit of Hawaii with beautiful prose and the tension between Chellie and Cameron is hot and genuine. If you’re in the mood for a short, sexy story with a happy-for-now ending, I recommend giving Reluctant Companions a try.
