In a quest to attain tribal unity and solidarity, a plan is hatched by Col. Okoye, a well-meaning military governor, to merge all the kingdoms in Isoko, an African tribe, and produce one kingdom under a head king. Fair enough, all the kings of the different kingdoms agree to realise this seemingly simple plan. Then they are trapped in a fierce tussle for the head kingship, leading to deadly clashes, kidnapping, and revenge among other things. But who among them will emerge victorious? With this great story as framework, the writer demonstrates the fact that human government is a case of dog eat dog.

Josiah Ogholi offers readers a parable. Col. Okoye decided the people of Isoko land should have one centralized government/leader to unify them. He convinced the people and leaders it would be in the best interest of the people to have one leader (ovie-ologbo). Soon there were deals being made behind closed doors to assure who would be the head king. It was evident that each person was working only for himself. As the title indicates it is a dog eat dog world.
Ogholi has a unique and fascinating way of exposing the corruption of government. It is easy to see the "meaning" behind this tale. We need only watch our own government as power plays, promises, corruption, intrigue came to light. Promises are being made to various leaders to assure votes. Yes it is a dog eat dog world. This is a brilliant tale.
Soldier's Gap is a non-traditional mystery with literary elements. The high school principal is brutally murdered, but Deputy Sheriff Dave Jenkins's search for meaning and love is a much more significant theme.
