An eight-year-old Brownie Scout marshals her troop, the Browntown Ocelots, to save the world, Santa Claus, and Christmas as we know it, assisted by Walt and Madge, her bewildered parents, along with Dolby Jenks, World’s Number One Champion Detective.

Finding out that the Earth's magnetic field is about to reverse itself, an eight-year-old Brownie Scout marshals the Browntown Ocelots to save the world, Santa Claus, and Christmas as we know it, assisted by Walt and Madge, her bewildered parents, along with Dolby Jenks, World’s Number One Champion Detective:
"Dolby Jenks, World’s Champion Detective. How may I help you?”
Betty explained the problem. “And so you see, things fly through the air and stick to me when I walk by. None of my friends’ mothers will let them play with me.”
“A tricky business,” replied Dolby Jenks, World's Champion Detective. “Not my field, I'm afraid, Betty. I would suggest that you find different friends with different mothers.”

Excerpt

Betty's friends were not sad because the Earth was flat—everybody knew the Earth was flat sometimes, although it took some getting used to.
“Oh... brollyflogger,” said Betty.
“Language, Betty. Language,” said Mrs. Kunkle.

Professional Reviews

Is Imagination Wasted on Children?
Literature, like enoki, should not be wasted on children. Fortunately there is no question that Magnetic Betty, another effort by Rob Hunter is literature. For one thing, its cover does not proclaim that it's word choice is level appropriate, or class specific or meet any other double entendrč friendly rubric. This means that this volume is not approved by the Global Council for Excessive Explanation of Pointless Innuendo's Dumb Down Project (GCEEPI:DDP). This relieves all serious adults of any responsibility to attend the remainder of this review.
Now, for the rest of us: Yes! Rob Hunter has done it again! He has added a highly polished small industrial diamond to the crown wrought by Carroll, Sendak, Thurber, and a few others. Too few others for our own good. With the omelette pan I join in giving this book a full "zoop!"
