Prologue to Growing with the Goddess Gardener, Book I in the Garden Shorts Series
It seems like yesterday that I was driving tractor, watering vineyards, or cleaning the chicken coops on the ranch in Northern California where I grew up. My parents were farmers and we grew grapes, walnuts, cattle, and kids…not necessarily in that order. My Mother was the gardener who, when she married my Father in 1948, moved to the “boondocks” into a house built in the late 1880’s right out of Dicken’s Great Expectations. She quickly went to work clearing blackberry bushes, poison oak, and encroaching vines to create a welcoming home and garden oasis where she could safely raise her five children, entertain our large Italian extended family, and grow all of her favorite flowers, herbs, and vegetables. My Father had 368 acres of hills, peaches, pears, walnuts, and apricots to tend, eventually, eliminating the fruit trees in favor of grapes. For family consumption, we maintained an orchard of every fruit imaginable with year around cultivation of vegetables that we would lovingly harvest and eat in season. Climbing trees and eating produce when it was ripe and juicy was our normal routine. Together my parents designed a life where we lived off the land with everything homegrown and farm raised. Many people dream of this country experience. We lived it daily. It was nirvana-the birthplace of my deep love and respect for nature and the meaning of the circle of life.
