The title poem
Bonding by Helen Presberg
Four boys pulled and tugged,
struggled and grew,
surrounded by noise and mess,
needing King Solomon
instead of me,
afraid of boys,
awed by their strangeness,
exuberance, competition.
Somehow we survived,
but now my reward,
lovely women appear,
my family expands,
I bond with daughters,
take vows at their weddings,
find communion with females,
common intuitions,
language, understandings.
Of course the company pudding
should not be eaten now;
the juice belongs in a pitcher;
piecing bits of fabrics
makes a quilt;
skein of yarn form afghans;
flowers are important,
as is sitting together.
