Silently and swiftly, their bikes careened down Jackson Street.Building up speed and bottoming out at Third Street, they generated enough energy to drift up past Second Street to the Yoder School playground, terrorizing anyone in their paths and stopping for no one.
These were no ordinary bicycles. They were Frankenstein's monsters on wheels. Each bike had a standard bicycle frame, two soapbox derby wheels, and two bolts that replaced the axles. No chains, no brakes, and more frighteningly, no screws to anchor the bikes to the frame. Lift the frame and at the wheels fell off. The wobbly construction foretold the disaster to come.
