Chapter 6
The Opening Of The Seals
With the Title Deed now in His possession, Christ proceeds to open the seals. As they are opened, the process of judgment and redemption begins, and a preview of things that will take place in the first half of the Tribulation are seen.
1.Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.”
The First Seal. Judgment begins.
The words, “and see,” are not included in some translations,
(NASV, NIV) and more properly reflect the command given in this
verse. The word, “come” is addressed to the rider of the first horse,
and is a command to him to make his appearance. The “beasts”
are those referred to in 4:7.
2.And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.
Who is the rider? We can determine that it is not Christ from the following:
1.Christ is holding the book and opening the seals.
2.Christ is the “Lamb,” and not the warrior.
3.Christ does not appear until chapter 19.
4.This rider has only one crown (stephanos), whereas Christ has many crowns (diademas) Rev. 19:12.
5.This rider has a bow, Christ will have a sharp sword coming from His mouth.
6.This rider does not conquer all, “…and to conquer,” signifies unfinished conquests.
While it is true that this rider tries to appear like Christ and to act like Christ, he fails in his attempt. Therefore, he is the Antichrist.
His bow demonstrates the power to make war, but he does not war himself - he has no arrow.
3When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.”
4Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.
The Second Seal. A rider is on a red horse. Since red is the color of blood, this will be a time of warfare and bloodshed. The rider has a sword, the symbol of war. He will wage war in order to subdue rebellious nations and bring them under the rule of Antichrist (1 Thess. 5:3).
