Bill Haydon is the story's central character who builds a successful career with a Wall Street investment firm. As his popularity grows, he becomes disenchanted with the mediocrity of his industry, causing him to lose his respect for his profession. In the meantime, he becomes addicted to money and loses his morality which leads to a criminal offense.
"Stock Power" is about a stockbroker's exceptional ability to achieve success for himself and his clients. Hard work and a high I.Q for the stock market earn him a reputation that appears to be indestructible. One obvious flaw in his character is revealed early in the story as Haydon grapples with his alcoholism, combined with a looming ambivalence toward his marriage.
During the final years of his career, Haydon's insatiable desire for money leads to a series of illegal transactions involving his customers' cash accounts. Gambling on horse races causes him to abandon his fiduciary responsibilities and to create a deeper personal financial deficit. Haydon is ultimately forced to admit to his misconduct and face severe punishment.
