He mixes potions - He rides a broomstick, brandishes his wand - and he makes house calls.
Torbant Mahl is a wizard who was tutored at the fabled Chinese island of Mount Penglai, under the personal direction of the powerful sorcerer, Anqi Sheng. Now back in Britain he fills his days curing sick magical people and sick magical animals - like Elton a farting dragon. More than a doctor and a vet, he is a talented and extremely powerful wizard - a husband and a father. Antonia, his eldest daughter assists him on his visits, Magdalena, Mags, stays home and receives tuition from a hired witch on all things magical. Sonia, his wife used to be a vampire. She still has a her fangs and the ability to change into a bat but she can't perform magic. Mags enchants a book in an attempt to find a 'lost' wizard or witch in the 'clotters,' the non-magical world and is successful. Through the enchanted book she finds Zoe a thirteen year old girl whose mother is dying from cancer. Mags pleads to her father to help. This is only the beginning because there is much more to Mags. Her father is told that she has deep magic, strong and ancient. Mags is entrusted into the care of Ophir-Pel, guardian and keeper of the Pool of Knowing. This witch is certain that Mags can see into the pool, something very few are able to do - as if this wasn't enough - Ophir-Pel has to take Mags to the Isle of Staffa, to Fingal's Cave to release her inner magical creature. The creature that Mags releases is of the rarest kind and places Mags in danger - from creatures like the vampire snatchers and the storm-horseman. Just what is this creature that Mags has and why does Robert, the Mahl's pet dragon, morph into savage attack mode to protect his family. These questions will be answered in this, the first in a series of Torbant Mahl, wizard adventures

“Did you see it, Mags?” Ophir-Pel asked excitedly. “Did you see the rocks, did the sea change? Oh please, please tell me you saw it.”
Mags was once again, a little girl, looking up into the face of the witch that was stooped in front of her, her face inches from hers. She swallowed hard, her mind spinning from the experience.
“Wow. I feel a bit dizzy.”
The witch bit her bottom lip, her eyes wide, urging Mags, to answer her questions. “Mags, please, please tell me what you saw, it is so important. I must know.”
Mags shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. She no longer felt the chill of the wind, instead she felt a warmth from deep inside her. Slowly her mind cleared and she straightened herself. Without explaining it, she felt a calmness that she had never felt before and everything looked different through her eyes, clearer, sharper and she felt a kind of wisdom, an understanding that was new to her.
When the fog in her head cleared she looked at the witch and grinned. “I feel amazing.”
“I'm sure you do, dear but please,” the witch implored, “please tell me what you saw. Was it different? What did you see? What did you feel?” Ophir-Pel's voice had reduced to a whisper. “I need to know.”
Mags licked her lips. “The sea had gone. All where the sea was, were rocks, like the ones in the cave. They stretched right out as far as I could see and . . .”
“Yes, dear, what else?” she asked as Mags hesitated.
“Two guys, huge men, I mean, like they were like, massive – fighting, well wresting, sort of. Giants, I guess you'd call them.”
Ophir-Pel shrieked with delight, leaping up into the air, her arms raised. “Wonderful, absolutely wonderful,” she said, clapping. She hugged Mags, squeezing her tight. “You know what this means?”
Mags shrugged. “No clue.”
