Excerpt
The fire became fierce, the flames blazing higher and higher until the giant bird was totally consumed. The cauldron glowed brighter as the heat from the fire grew stronger. The fire was now a seething inferno, the flames blazing high towards the ceiling, noise like a hurricane roaring, filling the room with a deafening thunder that shook both the floor and the walls. The cobbles that the cauldron rested on vibrated, the metal of the cauldron's feet chattering in the stone floor. The fire burst through the hole in the roof and those outside saw fire surging up into the sky.
Sonia, her face contorted with agony, could take it no more and burst into heart rending sobs, burying her face into her husband's chest, her shoulders heaving violently.
Antonia looked on in disbelief at what she was witnessing and she too shed tears.
Robert and Primrose snuggled up to one another in an apparent show of mutual comfort. Anqi Sheng's face had a half smile on it, his eyes shining with pride.
The fire burned fierce for several minutes then began to die down, slowly at first then gaining speed until the fire was gone almost all together. Quickly the fire was out and nothing remained standing. Mags, the phoenix, was gone. All that remained was a cauldron full of smoldering ashes, with glowing embers until they too went out. Thin smoke rose from the ashes as the last of the embers fought to stay alight until at last they submitted to nature and went out. The death sequence was complete.
Sonia turned her head and with red, puffy eyes looked at where her daughter had stood just a few minutes earlier and saw nothing. She bawled uncontrollably.
Mags was dead.
